Insidiator Posted March 29, 2015 Posted March 29, 2015 So Lover's Labbers, I would like some help. I need a new PC. No, put your money away, that's not what I need you for. I haven't built one for 8 or 9 years. I am VERY out of touch with what is current in the PC world. So I would like some suggestions for a build. BUT! I really don't need anything cutting edge. I don't play the latest games, I am not a lover of high end graphics and do not edit video or sound or anything like that. To give you an idea, Skyrim is the latest game I've played and apart from that, I mostly play minecraft, terraria or more than a decade old games. So building a supercomputer is completely wasteful for me. I just need a computer that does not lag for 10 minutes when starting up firefox just because minecraft also runs in the background. So, with that in mind, any suggestions? Also, no peripherals required, I can handle those on my own. Thank you in advance.
nutluck Posted March 29, 2015 Posted March 29, 2015 Well what is your budget and are you using anything from your old computer or is this a complete build?
techiespeek Posted March 29, 2015 Posted March 29, 2015 You listed "Skyrim" that game takes quite a load of resources to run well, especially if you start adding mods to it, for a basic box, you can get by on around $350, then add in a decent video card for another $100 or so and you should be fine. CPU I would go no less than 3.0 or higher, DDR3 RAM at 16000HZ should be fast enough and 8GB of RAM is plenty. Stick with a video card that has 1GB of RAM or more, probably 2GB video card would be best. Take a look at some "Barebones" systems, these are usually pretty good deals which have all the basics covered and is a good starting point. Let me know if I can help you further, building systems and networks for the IT and Gaming Industry is what I do for a living.
Insidiator Posted March 29, 2015 Author Posted March 29, 2015 Well, my budget can go up to 600 euros (about $650) and It'll be built from scratch (probably). I can't really keep anything from my current PC, it's about 9 years old and although it has proved to be a tough bastard (it runs Skyrim, for fuck's sake) I think I need a new start.
bjornk Posted March 29, 2015 Posted March 29, 2015 Here's a pretty decent build someone posted on pcpartpicker.com, which costs about 640 USD. There are others, of course, but should give you an idea at least. However, keep in mind that this build will most certainly cost you more if you live in Europe. http://pcpartpicker.com/b/kR9WGX (or http://pcpartpicker.com/p/Y7QwZL) CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler Motherboard: ASRock Z97 PRO4 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard RAM: Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory SSD: OCZ ARC 100 120GB 2.5" Solid State Drive HDD: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive Graphics Card: Asus GeForce GTX 760 4GB ROG Video Card Case: Corsair SPEC-02 ATX Mid Tower Case PSU: EVGA 600B 600W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply Optical Drive: Samsung SH-224DB/BEBE DVD/CD Writer or this one which is slightly more expensive (667.32 USD) probably due to water cooling, but includes the OS as well.
Insidiator Posted April 2, 2015 Author Posted April 2, 2015 Thanks for now guys, I'll check some stores and ask again if I need clarifications.
Insidiator Posted September 30, 2015 Author Posted September 30, 2015 OK, 5 months after asking for help, I'm decided on the upgrade. So, as I am picking apart my old PC, I started thinking, Could I perhaps salvage something to improve the new one? I'm thinking of keeping the RAM to add to the new build and was also wondering, is there a point in adding the old gpu (gigabyte gefroce 9400 gt) to support the new gpu (gefroce GTX 960) or will I gain nothing from them working together?
Imperfection Posted September 30, 2015 Posted September 30, 2015 If your old systems is 8 years old then previous ram will most likely not work in new system, check the motherboard specs of the new board your looking at for ram specifications. There all a couple threads below that ask the same question about the second graphics card, consensus was no real gain, just extra heat in the box. http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/second-graphic-card-for-physx.203513/ http://forums.evga.com/Dedicated-PhysX-question-after-upgrading-m2336006.aspx The Geforce FAQ says its possible and works but your mileage may vary http://www.geforce.com/hardware/technology/physx/faq Hope that helps
Insidiator Posted October 2, 2015 Author Posted October 2, 2015 I see. Thanks for the info, I probably won't do it then. Not much need for it, considering my PC needs. Thanks everyone.
