Fps drop in 3rd person view and some wierd game freezes

Hello i am new here so i dont know if i post this in the right section.

I just installed Oblivion through Steam since i had been playing Skyrim for a while now and always wanted to play Oblivion. So i went ahead and started the game as explained in a video "Oblivion 2014 Graphics Tutorial - Tweaked ENB + Graphic mods 'Quick setup" (since im not allowed to link videos).

To the point where you set your video settings ingame and test if the game runs stable. My problem now is that i seem to get fps drops by just changing from 1st person view to 3rd person view. The fps changes from 60 to 45.

Another issue i seem to have is that the game freezes in a wierd way. Like when the gards came i was in 3rd person view and it felt like i was walking towards the wall where the window is, in my cell, and i couldnt control anything. But in reality i must have still be standing in front of the cell door since that damn guard, "which i couldnt even see, because my character was staaring at the wall where the window is" kept telling me to move aside. So i had to kill the process.

On the next try i managed to get into the conversation with the king i assume. Here i had another issue that my fps droped down to 40 roughly. Now i did read that Oblivion only uses one Core and that this is normal so i wasnt too worried. But all of a sudden i couldnt move my mouse, the fps went up to 60 again and i was stuck in the conversation with the king, unable to choose anything or press any key. So i killed that process, too.

Now i dont have any mods, i planned to install a view really good ones for my first ever play of Oblivion but i cant seem to play it even without mods.

My PC:

OS: Windows 8.1

Processor: Intel® Xeon® CPU E3-1220 V2 @ 3,10GHz ( Which is a Server Processor comparable to Intel i5)

Graphics Card: AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series

RAM: 8G

With this i can play Skyrim with STEP mods installed + RealVision ENB and Armor Mods at about 40-60 fps, my drivers are all new since i installed Windows 8 lately. If anyone kows anything about this issue, help would be appreciated. Also if you know any good Mods that enhance the gameplay without affecting the Story of the game feel free to tell me about it.

to link anything you need to have a least 2 or 3 posts in your count.

you need to see what exactly did you tweak !

  -  remove enb  and set  it back to original settings  and  test your game  .

  -  what graphics mod did you install ?   remove them  all  than  see if your game has no probleme without.    after your test  install your graphic mods one by one and each time you test and look for any bugs .(the only i can think off is obge ).   this way you can find what happend wrong.(coflict problems or settings problems).

Thanks for the fast answer, i have not installed any ENB yet(Which means, no graphics mod aswell). All i did was setting the settings to maximum and leaving AA off. Im basicly having problems with the Vanilla Oblivion.

I find that Oblivion will have insane FPS drops all over the place. Especially when lights are involved. Just cap the framerate to thirty, set iFPSClamp=30 in your ini and you'll be golden.

You can't compare what you can do with Skyrim to what you can do with Oblivion.  The oblivion game engine is VERY old and as you stated will only use one core.

That said, there are several things you need to look into:

1. Use OSR http://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/23208/?

2. If you are using a 64 bit OS then use 4GB memory patch:  http://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/45576/?

3. Use Streamline: http://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/10400/?

These will help manage your memory heap sizes and purge your buffers.

Make sure you install OBSE (NOTE:  steam install and use instructions are inside the zip file in the readme.  Steam install instructions are DIFFERENT than disc installation and use instructions): http://obse.silverlock.org/

You are going to have some slow downs with oblivion, your video card will be a bit of a bottleneck but the biggest one will be your CPU.  The Xeon is the low end and that will limit things a touch.

And a drop from 60 to 45, not all that uncommon IMO. When you start dropping say from 50 to single digits; 5, 6, etc. that indicates a serious overall config problem. I would as gregathit recommended above start with OSR and hard clamp your FPS at 50 to 55 max. I have mine set at 50. Then apply the 4GB patch. I personally wouldn't use Streamline, but that's more of a personal choice. If you begin small, making incremental changes and avoid making broad sweeping changes you can avoid driving yourself insane in this setup process.

HEAP is another feature in OSR, but it will take some reading up on your specific hardware to determine the best HEAP settings for OSR. I would then add on MoreHeap 11-44985-1-1.zip, available over on Nexus. I only recently added that based on another LL members recommendation, and did see some FPS improvement and stabilization in areas where I still had issues previously.

Something else to begin setting up, since you do have a AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series, is your game profiles for Oblivion. As just an example here is my preferred settings:

Those are my current settings, after weeks of testing. Again, you will need to discover your own optimal settings for your hardware. There is no one-size-fits-all. VidCard settings can be set to override Oblivion settings too. Bus speeds are yet another factor in the overall equation also.

I recommend avoiding any form of overclocking of either your CPU, RAM or vid card, till after you get used to and have a stable setup with the above recommendations from everyone here. Once you do, only then incrementally overclock one item at a time and test, test, test in-game results.

In the end you will have to make a choice, either decent performance or quality, or a mid way point between the two. That again is a personal choice and up to you and your current hardware entirely.

Greetings to all.

I have experienced the mouse and keyboard unresponsive issue during the conversation with Uriel. After googling the problem and a bit of research I discovered that the most likely cause is broken audio codecs. There is a program that will fix this. I will have to find the link to the fix and post it tonight after I get off work. It will install another media player, but during the install process it gives the option to find and fix broken audio codecs. Worked well for me.  I'm using Win 7, by the way.

I'm running the non-steam version of Oblivion, and since I use Mod Organizer and can have multiple player profiles with different mods active, I typically run Vanilla at the start, then at the exit of the sewer, before leaving, I save, then start loading mods. After creating my character, I leave the sewers, save again and load more mods. This way I know I have a working vanilla default save.

Since finding the Lovers Lab about 3 months ago (and lurking and reading), I have nearly the full suite of Lovers mods, with slaving, creatures, 2ch, and H and T club all working together, plus other mods, Can't help with ENB, since don't use it.

I will echo what the veterans posted above. All these mods are resource intensive and some work will be required to get them working together. Especially, follow the guidelines on load order.

I'll be back later with the link, off to the salt mines.

Thanks for all the posts, they have been really helpful.

So far i managed to install some mods and Oblivion seems sable, i am using both the Stutter Remover( with the heap Algorithm 6 atm) and MoreHeap set to 1024 atm, aswell as the 4GB Patch and the Unofficial Patches. But i still get the mouse freeze. I tried to disable my audio codecs and my video codecs, but that didnt help either. I also tried to set the cores used by Oblivion to 3, as well as running oblivion in Windows 8/7 compability mode. Nothing helped. I always get a mouse cursor freeze about 2 - 5 minutes into the game. After reading that Windows 8 has problems in that department, and Oblivion seems to be one of the problematic games:

http://www.pcworld.com/article/2062425/microsoft-fixes-windows-8-1-mouse-issues-but-not-for-all-games.html

I decided to remove Windows 8 and install Windows 7 again just to try if my cursor keeps freezing. I guess this will be a long night lol.

At lunch, I found the sites I mentioned. I noticed above, that one must have 3 posts in the forum to add links to a post. Since I have not yet done that, I will get the exact information you may need and make an extra post so that I can provide the links.

The mouse freeze has been documented and when it happened to me, the most common place was during Uriel's talk. But I had it happen near the prison bars also. Did Five clean installs thinking that my installation was bad (did have a directx issue on one), but then found this audio codec issue. Will be back within the hour.

Oragensaft2,

Not to hijack the thread, but since I need to get an extra post done to post links, I will take a moment to say a couple things.

I have run a website in the past for 3D Graphic Artists and know and try to follow forum protocols. That said, I will take this opportunity to say a big thank you to those who are working on the Lover's Project. I've been modelling for about 10 years, have over 1000 hrs into a heavily modded Skyrim, countless hours with Oblivion, but quit gaming for a year to set up a 3D printer. When I decided to fire up Oblivion on a custom built machine that I built with 3D in mind, I was updating my old mods and tools when I ran across a link to the Lover's Lab. An incredible amount of work done here by everyone. Hope to be able to contribute in some way after I knock some of the rust off my gaming tools.

Back to the subject at hand.

Hopefully, I will be able to provide some helpful information in the next post, as well as links. :)

As with any suggested fix, please evaluate whether this will work for you.

Sifting through a lot of information to try to solve my own issue, I discounted driver or hardware issues, since I built my computer and knew all the drivers were up to date. I found that one of the most common causes of loss of mouse/keyboard control seemed to be this broken audio codec issue. Here is some supporting info:

http://wiki.tesnexus.com/index.php/Sound_issues

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Technical_Support#Controls_Become_Unresponsive_After_A_Short_Time

(see this section:  Input (Keyboard/Mouse) Problems

Now, the tesnexus post has a link for a program called K-Lite Codec Pack, but does not take you to the parent site. This is the link to the site you want to visit

http://www.codecguide.com/

The file I downloaded and used was:  K-Lite_Codec_Pack_1065_Full.  I install the Media Player Classic Version

Additionally,  there is a problem with ffdshow interfering with Oblivion and the installation allows you to set ffdshow to ignore Oblivion if it is installed.

This codec pack is an exe installer, and can be fully uninstalled (will remove everything including registry entries).

Hope this may be of some use to you. Let me know if you need additional help

I've had a couple of looks at Windows 8 and found it not only hideous but totally not user friendly at all. My 80 year old Dad ended up with it on a new laptop and had to relearn where everything was located. Not exactly a stellar marketing approach by Micro$oft IMO.

I'll stay with Win7 Ultimate 64-bit for now and the foreseeable future. I'm just not into all this O/S eye candy bullshit (I play video games for that!) and attempts to compensate for stupid users that Micro$oft does. The last, eventually rock solid O/S from them was IMO WinXP. Everything after that was the wrong direction and for all the wrong reasons.

I did have some mouse issues a long way back, but on another PC running WinXP, not Win7.

Curious. Based on a very dim memory, I recall there being a specific DX9 DLL that may be needed. Have you done any research in that direction yet? It may be worth the effort. Check your DX9, 10 or 11 stuff.

Also any mouse/keyboard software you may have installed. I use a wireless Logitech mouse & keyboard combo and it was a bit problematic at first, till I found the optimum settings via the software app from Logitech.

Yes! That did it. After failing to install the latest version of Catalyst onto Windows 7 and back to Windows 8, i installed Windows Media Player 12. Checked if .mp3 and .wav are associated with it. Then installed the full version of "K-Lite Codec Pack" and checked if FFDShow had oblivion.exe in the ignore section, which it did( i guess thats because i set "ignore Whitelisted Games" in the installation or something like that, quite a long installation lol).

After that i went ahead and made a new game and no more mouse or control freezes. Thanks alot.

I suppose i should mark this as solved or something.
