Shenmu -- is it worth it?

I bought this a long time ago and never got around to playing it, and now I don't even own a Dreamcast anymore. But I've read so much about how wonderful it was, how it was the magnum opus of the company, how they threw so much money into it that they bankrupted themselves. So I dloaded it, along with nullDC. And I still haven't gotten around to playing it. All I know about it is that it opens with the 'avenge your father' cliche. It's been sitting on my HD for over a year and I still haven't gotten around to playing it.

Does it really deserve my time to play, or should I just wipe it?

EDIT: How do I delete a thread? This really isn't the place for it.

I bought it a long time ago, with my old Dreamcast (worse inversion ever.. damn you SEGA)

But the game was excellent, It was probably the best game of the year, and the best game on average during the subsequent 3 years.

And you should ask the moderators to move the post to the right place.

Not sure if it can stand the test of time on a lot of things these days. You'd likely just be banking on the story itself, which is unfinished for the player. The game innovated a lot of concepts, that many sandbox games use as standard now. Shenmue was released before Grand Theft Auto 3, so it was many of our first introduction into that sort of thing, or it might've even helped pioneer the sandbox sort of genre.

I played it a long time ago back when it first came out, someone simply just burnt the disc for me, back when everyone was doing that with their Dreamcast. I never finished it or even played through much of it. It was definitely a very beautiful game though, and I can see why it holds a special place for many.

Nostalgia can blind people, though. So if you do play it, don't go in with all the hype about it, cause it might not meet your expectations due to that alone.

I got my Shenmue when it launched on my SEGA Dreamcast( Best console ever!!!(still have it in prestine condition) and both shenmue games.

If you can place it back to 2000 when it was released at the time it was awesome game i enjoyed it alot.

Don't start compare it to todays standard or all your experience over time.

Just enjoy it as if its was 2000.

lol I still got a Dreamcast, too.

Only consoles I actually don't have anymore are my 8bit and 16bit era ones, which I gave away to younger family a long time ago.
