Vote TESV:Skyrim the best game of the year

Indeed, I've played Skyrim for the first time just yesterday, while visiting a friend and while I only got to play for an hour or so, overall I'm disappointed with some of the changes they've made from Oblivion and MW,

First, while the graphics are rather nice and I'm sure there's all sorts of wonderful technical upgrades compared to previous ES games, as a casual player I'd have to say that my modded Oblivion looks juat as good at the moment.

Second creating a sexy looking male character is even harder than in vanilla Oblivion, then again this could also just be due to my ineptitude and the fact that I could only play for a short time.

Third the console port UI is just atrocious, but this will probably be fixed by modders well before the special editions come out, so I'm not too concerned about this one atm.

And fourth, and this is my biggest disappointment to date, the unimesh armours.

While I can understand that this is in some ways easier for modders it does greatly limit our freedom as end users since we can now only mix and match through the power of things like nifskope. As someone who plays mostly male characters I greatly dislike this since the variety of male clothing in any ES game since

Daggerfall is limited at best and not being able to freely combine what we do get from the game and the occasional friendly modder limits this even further.

I've also heard of some other disturbing issues like the construction kit being tied to the Steam workshop and the fact that we cannot create custom spells, which saddens this magic user player greatly.

So from the quick sampling I got of this game I've gotten mixed feelings at best and while I do think it will be quite a fun game to play, I just do not see it having the staying power and life-cycle of Oblivion or Morrowind (then again if they want to sell more games or official mods this might just be what Bethsoft is aiming for).

So while I do think Skyrim will be a good and fun game, I think it is yet to be determined whether the game(engine and toolkit) will provide enough potential for modders to overcome some or all of these flaws and turn this into a great game.

For all its potential, and it has got a hell of a lot of that, the tie into Steam is such a negative that I couldn't possibly give this one the thumbs up.

Beth seem to give too much prominence to their marketing department. They would not still be in business if it hadn't been for the creatives involved in Morrowind, and the inspired idea to release the Construction Kits as part of the package.

To destroy that legacy with this ill-advised move away from player ownership negates whatever (considerable) merits this game has.

However, the game has been determinedly levelled at a low-teen, console based, audience (whatever the rating on the tin).

Such an audience is known more for enthusiasm than discrimination, so I'm sure that it will win without my vote.

-snip-

Well...I never was able to get it (Oblivion) to look as good as you can through simple mods for Skyrim. There was also never a density of scenes in Oblivion so everything looked sparse and bland, and they really overdid the bloom in oblivion, it washed out every scene.
