Cannot see follower - newbie question

New to Skyrim so please be gentle.

I am trying to get a custom follower but the placeatme command does not know the id that I supply retrieved by the help command.

What am I doing wrong?

In the console type help her name (if the follower's name is Lydia, write help lydia), then player.placeatme xxxxxxxx, where xxxxxxxx is the given code above.
