bahamut2119 Posted August 11, 2014 Posted August 11, 2014 I dont normally get this but I ran into another program that when it crashes will do this sometimes. So often when dungeons and dragons online crashes on a exit of the game or if I get sick of waiting for it to quit and ctrl alt delete> end process it and now a few times when I was trying to run oblivion but it crashed on me (not every time) I get a very annoying rapid clicking sound originally the only thing I found that got rid of it was a system reboot but with the advent of oblivion doing it I discovered me disabling then re enabling my sound card also fixed it. This problem happens with both sound cards i've tried my onboard realtek (disabled now via bios) and my current asus xonar dgx. One thing I noticed with oblivion was I had a sound codec icon in my system tray the second I hovered over it it disappeared but I know its from K lite codec pack never noticed it with ddo crashing anyone have a clue what its going on? Also when I wa still using my onboard I lived on headphone and swapping to speakers I wouldn't notice the problem but going back to headphones I could hear it again now with oblivion doing it I could hear it over the speakers.
Guest carywinton Posted August 11, 2014 Posted August 11, 2014 Sound issues are probably one of the hardest things to isolate with any of the Bethesda Softworks games, mainly due to the fact there really is no way to interact with sound in these games, no configuration to check, nothing, The K lite Codec pack sometimes works and sometimes causes folks more problems, I have seen both situations. I currently have similar issues with occasional "popping" sounds coming from my speakers in game and usually a CTD shortly there after. Obviously with what I read here in you post it looks like you have done far more to resolve this than most people would have, I applaud you for this. My "theory" on all this has to do with "HAL" the Hardware Abstraction Layer that was removed in any version of Windows from Vista onward. I sometimes refer to it as "HAL 9000" yes it's a poke at 2001 A Space Odyssey, which when you think about it is fitting for Microsoft .I never had any issues running these games in XP. I have read where most sound cards have difficulty switching between head phones and speaker output, a lot of complaints are seen on forum topics with regards to both Creative Labs and Asus cards. Bethesda Softworks Technical Support folks suggested to me to make sure that Windows Media Player was the default for *.ogg and *.mp3 file formats, this might be a good place to check and see if it is on your system. I just pulled the Sound Blaster X-Fi out of my system and went back to the on board Realtek Azaila to see if anything different had happened, so for I still get the "popping", but the CTDs are far less frequent. I hope some of this helps you. I will try to think up some more suggestions, also if you can give me some idea of your system specifications, this might help too, like OS, Motherboard, Video Card, RAM, etc.
bahamut2119 Posted August 11, 2014 Author Posted August 11, 2014 Full system specs DFI Lanparty Dk 790 fx AMD 7750 fx 2.7 ghz EVGA Geforce 660 gtx 2 gb 2x 4gb Gskill ddr2 + 2x 2gb corsair (6gb total @ 333 mhz) ASUS Xonar DGX Windows 7 I already run MWP as default for the vast majority of audio/video files its the only player I use since i've never had any problem with it and playing movies on my tv which is also hooked up to my pc. My problem isn't usually spawning from beth soft programs just oblivion altho I play skyrim mostly ob was just i'm bored I wanna try this game out again.
Guest carywinton Posted August 11, 2014 Posted August 11, 2014 Ok, then sounds like you have all the current options I could think of pretty well covered, so now it's time to dig a bit deeper and see if something in Oblivion is causing this. Just out of curiosity, overall how do you like the Asus Xonar sound cards? I have read they are pretty darn good, but seem expensive? Skyrim works fine then? No sound issues or anything there? If this is the case then most definitely there is an issue with Oblivion, is this a brand new install of Oblivion? This might help your issue as well, I just read a post in regards to the HSMgr for the Asus card, turning off the GX feature in the Xonar Audio Center seems to fix the crashes after a few seconds into the game.
bahamut2119 Posted August 11, 2014 Author Posted August 11, 2014 Ya it was a brand new install actully the 3rd time ive reinstalled it due to issues trying to get it to run right. Personally I love the card sounds better than any of the 3 onboard realtek sound chips ive used and to me is less confusing about many of its options in comparison with the soundblaster chipset cards ive also used over the years. As far as that gx option goes it was enabled im gonna go try something if that was the cause for my oblivion crashing in seconds after the dialog start in the prison im gonna be overjoyed I love playing old games soetimes. I still play AOE and AOE 2 and COH from time to time oh and the original simcity game. EDIT: holy shit that tip about gx fixed the big issue I had running ob it didn't crash as soon as dialog started. I had a funny feeling that it was more of a hw issue in that game so thank you soooo much id kiss your feet but theres a huge issue with this convo being a online one lol. Altho I still got another one I gotta work on fixing preventing me from starting a new character.
Rayblue Posted August 11, 2014 Posted August 11, 2014 Still, have you updated the drivers for the soundcard? Personally, I find the Realtek HD onboard just enough since I have the headphones on. Also, check the default format that your card puts out (usually it's 24-bit/48000hz but can be changed to 16-bit/41000hz).
Guest carywinton Posted August 11, 2014 Posted August 11, 2014 Yaa! Glad that worked! Ok then just tag your post as "Solved" so someone down the line may need this little tad bit of info to help them.
bahamut2119 Posted August 11, 2014 Author Posted August 11, 2014 Not known if the clicking sounds solved its just known that i'm not crashing in oblivion upon the first audio dialog in the prison. Im sure ob will crash sooner or later but it doesn't always produce that noise the only way I know to cause it is if I load DDO load one of my characters on my guild ship quit but task kill the process before the game can exit on its own. If I load ddo ill be stuck for the next few hrs being hounded by my friends trying to get me to do this and that and my guild members trying to figure out where i've been even though I told em i'm taking a extended break. I stepped out to the store a bit ago but now that im back ill be messing with oblivion for a bit trying to get the mods I want to run working in the game.
Rayblue Posted August 11, 2014 Posted August 11, 2014 I'd replace K-lite with CCCP, which does better for all types of media. Since it's an MMO that you're playing, some games seem to have audio output format compatibility issues (btw, what's the default format set up?). Try to lower it to 16-bit/41k.
bahamut2119 Posted August 11, 2014 Author Posted August 11, 2014 I just dropped it to 16/41 was 24/19200 and Ill update this next time I see this issue but could be months who knows having a lot of issues with oblivion and taking a break from messing with it for now and no plans on touching ddo for a bit this has been a known issue for me for over a year but since I quit playing ddo for now I dont regularly have this issue. I may pop in the game tonight after most folks I know have quit for the day. Im very well known on my home server considering I run 20 something characters 4 of wich are healers 2 clerics (pure healer and a warpreist) a favored soul smite specced but strong healer and a bard thats 100% healer specced so im a known healer not the best one but I have my moments and unlimited resources atm thanks to a few duping bugs that appeared recently and having a friend who filled my characters with plat and items. And my main happens to be a very strong archer im not the best player for anything there but I get by.
