Skyrim crashes on startup, but worked previously

Recommended Posts

So, I come here after trying all I could think of to check what might be wrong with my mods, and not being able to find the issue.

I run Skyrim through Mod Organizer, legit copy, got Steam running fine and stuff. All mods have been sorted by BOSS (and LOOT, I tried that as well) checked and cleaned by TES5Edit, patched by Wrye Bash, etc., I use the memory patch and have followed all the Skyrim optimization guide to the letter.

My load order (with BOSS) is the following:

(You may notice I'm running SexLab without adult mods; I'm testing SkyRe and I only needed SexLab's PapyrusUtil for SOS beta... Don't worry, I'll install more perv mods when this works, lol).

I've tried loading all my mods in TES5Edit to see if it gave any error, but it doesn't. I also checked them in Wrye Bash for any warnings, but none showed up. As a last resort, I disabled all my mods and tried to load the game clean through MO, which worked, so I started activating mods until I got to the culprit... Which happened to be SexLab. When I deactivate SexLab in MO (the whole mod, not the .esm file) the game loads fine. When I activate SexLab in MO but disable the .esm file, it still doesn't work. I've tried reinstalling the mod to see if something got messed somehow, but to no avail. I've also tried disabling all mods except SexLab to see if the problem is a conflict with another mod, but nope, the game crashes even with only SexLab & requirements only enabled.

The important thing is that (as far as I know) I didn't change anything in a couple days, it used to work until yesterday morning, then for some reason it stopped working in the evening. The only thing that happened yesterday was that the computer froze while I was playing and I had to forcefully restart it, which I suppose is the cause, but I honestly have no idea of what to to do fix this (apart from not using SexLab, which I would love to).

Any ideas?

Well I see you don't have the race compatibility esm but I don't know if XVision Children need it or not and I didn't notice any other race mods so you might not need it. Since your running MO like me that means you can run a completely vanilla version of the game, what happens when you start up a normal vanilla version from steam?

Xvision is just a head replacer for children, it doesn't alter their races and I'm not using any other custom races. And as I'm saying, the game worked fine with this exact setup prior to the computer's freeze. If I had required that mod previously, the game whouldn't have ever worked with that mod list.

As I said, the game works fine when I disable SexLab. If I start it with Steam or directly from the SKSE loader it will also work fine. If I start it with MO with all mods disabled but SexLab, it crashes. If I disable SexLab.esm, but keep the mod files active, it crashes as well. The problem doesn't seem to be a compatibility issue, there's something that is included with SexLab files that for some reason is fucking with my game, even though it didn't do before.

I am guessing you have but have you tried deleting sexlab and doing a new clean download and install of it? Maybe something got messed up during the download.

Did, and didn't work. Also the mod used to work before, so the download doesn't seem to be the cause. I got a new one just in case, but didn't fix anything.

Whatever is the conflict, maybe for some reason my game got fucked when the computer froze, but the game is working when I don't use SexLab, so I don't have a damn clue. It's like the game broke so that only SexLab doesn't work, and that's fucking retarded.

Is there anything saved by the game or the mod that could have been fucked up, that only SexLab uses? I know the saves are not corrupted because I can load them fine if I disable SexLab in MO (i simply get the message of a missing .esp file and that SOS is missing the PapyrusUtil stuff that is included with SexLab), and the game crashes even before the Bethesda logo pops out so it shouldn't be related to them, but what else could it be?

Link to comment

Well if you had a game freeze I suppose it is possible it broke something in one of the skyrim files that sexlab uses. Seems highly unlikely but I can't really think of anything else that would make this be happening.

You could try running a verification on steam and maybe steam will find a broken skyrim file and replace it. Of course doing that means redoing your ini file if you made changes to it and doing a clean edit on your esp's again.

I actually reinstalled Skyrim doing the verification thing. Tried the game with the mods without first cleaning the files, then cleaning them in TES5Edit (just in case). It doesn't work. I don't know what the fuck is going on, but the problem isn't the game itself, either.

This is a matter of honor already. I'm going to find what the hell is causing this even if I can't play the game in a month. Fuck it.

Ok, I just found the fucker, and I guess it was my fault for not being thorought enough when checking stuff (after all the crap I did, lol).

The problem was the StorageUtil.save file that SexLab's included PapyrusUtil creates. I'm not sure of how does this file get updated, but I suppose that it coincidentally got fucked by the computer freeze. I had this file in the Overwrite folder in MO, and I hadn't disabled it when testing for incompatibilities, because 1) I didn't think about it, and 2) The game worked already with that folder active, since it needed SexLab installed for the file to be accessed, so that made me completely forget about that.

I had to erase it and let the game create a new one, and now it works. Fortunately I have only one mod that uses that function (SOS beta), but for mods that store important stuff in there such as Beeing Female this might be really troublesome.

Anyways, this is solved. Thanks for your replies, people.

Very cool you found your problem and got it fixed. But a bit surprised if you could not reinstall things and have them work correctly. Not sure why that file spazzed out but seems if you reinstalled it that the new one would not cause a issue.

The problem is that this file gets placed in MO in the Overwrite folder since it's not originally part of any mod, so MO doesn't know where else to put it. So unless I cleaned it, I could have reinstalled all my 350+ mods and the game itself, and it would still be there. The only way was to clean the Overwrite folder, which I didn't because I though it had only BodySlide meshes, the bashed patch and some CharGen presets, and the file needed SexLab as well to do any harm.

Actually, that's precisely the reason for the recommendation of emptying the Overwrite folder and making a proper "Overwrite mod" that you can enable and disable. But I don't do that because I prefer to keep my mods as clean as possible, and the stuff that gets placed in the Overwrite folder are usually temporal files generated automatically by other mods, like SKSE logs, so if I wanted to do a clean reinstall and start over, I only need to erase that folder.

So, the morals of the story is that you shouldn't forget about the stuff in the Overwrite folder when checking for conflicts. Most stuff there is harmless, but some of the files stored are indeed capable of crashing your game at startup. If that happens, the safest thing to do is to use the right-click option on the Overwrite folder to "create mod", and disable it too.
