Tearing

What causes the excessive tearing I get sometimes? It's like my Skyrim has turned into the old Mystify screensaver from Windows 95. Colored lines going crazy. Seems to happen often when leaving Whiterun and looking out over the plain. Is this a missing texture for something, and how do I fix it?

Well, I would put most of my suspitions of that type of 'tearing' on the video card. Out of 8 system builds/upgrades, I've had three separate instances of your problem due to graphic cards either wearing out or received as defective from the manufacturer, two ATI and one by Nvidia. The replacement of the video card, in my cases, has usually fixed the issue.

How old is your PC and/or video card? Most older models (2-4 yrs old) cannot handle the amount of processing required nowadays, especially if you attempt to use the higher resolution texture mods that seem to have polluted 'That Other Site'. To test your card, there are several programs (mostly free) that you can install to benchmark how well your system or GPU holds up under use, like the ones here:

Just a suggestion, before you spend any money....

what the? darn thing.

you might want to turn on vsync and see if it fixes it.

that is what vsync does after all :)

My pc is only a couple months old. Video setup is dual GeForce 550 Ti 1gig cards in SLI. I've got everything on ultra with ENB and high rez texture mods, so I'll try lowering the graphics a little and turning on vsync.

You could try removing the ENB files incase maybe they arent agreeing with your game for some reason. Though some ENB mods will make parts of the game look great, they can sometimes cause other parts of the game to look awful.

It's a simple solution to the problem and that is V-Sync it lowers the frame rate down to what your monitor can handle. Turn it on in-game if you still get tearing then turn it off and turn it on in the Nvidia Control panel. If you get tearing still in both cases of V-Sync being on you will need a monitor that can handle more frames a second.

And as for your High rez mods and ENB they don't cause screen tearing. But they will slow down your game if you computer isn't good enough. Other than that have fun. =)

p.s. I'm quite surprised that many people with good computers don't know what v-sync does and why it's a good thing to have your framerate locked at 60fps.

Damn...forgot about v-sync settings. I've always kept my fps at 60, so I should have thought of that...DOH! I also have triple buffering set through the Nvidia Panel, and have had no issues with framerates on my newest system (at least while I'm using my 42" LCD HDTV for a monitor...).

Pardon my forgetfulness, and disregard my first post...:P

Had V-sync "force off" in the nvidia settings. think I read to do that in a tweak guide somewhere, because I usually have it on. Anyway, changed it to force on. I'll see later today how it does.

Thanks for the info!

Are you running with the new beta patch or not? There are some tearing problems with the current beta drivers and the patch.

Which driver version and card are you using? If you want to post your dxdiag here as an attachment it would help too.

Have you tried flipping out of SLI mode? There have been some reports over on the evga forums that the latest beta drivers cause some funky tearing issues in some games, skyrim included.
