shar181 Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 I know, I know. My second terrible bug in only three days. I do not have a great deal of luck with my Skyrim. ~_~ So, what's the problem? In short, this is the problem. When I attempt to go through certain area transitions while in Beast Form, my game invariably crashes. It doesn't happen with every area, just a few -- so far, anyway. Entering the area as a human and transforming inside does not cause the crash. Where has it happened? So far, I've run into this crash at the following locations: The bandit cave just outside of Riverwood. Swindler's Den, a bandit cave in the middle of Whiterun. Fort Greymore (Only the main building, entering the Prison area did not result in a crash). Ranevigg's Rest, a nordic ruin just north of Swindler's Den. It might be important to note that it doesn't matter whether I'm entering these zones, or leaving them. I tried to run into Swindler's Den as a human, and the expected crash didn't happen. I transformed inside with no problems, then ran back outside... and crashed. I'm not sure what these areas might have in common. They all have bandits inside -- though in the case of Ranevigg's Rest, they're ghosts and technically called "Adventurers". It might be an issue with the loading screens associated with them, or a werewolf-related script getting interrupted by the transition. However, as far as I know the loading screen wouldn't change due to being in Beast Form -- werewolf characters do get a few unique loading screens, but they would show up whether or not I'm in Beast Form. Likewise, if were an interrupted script I don't know why it would only happen at some doors, rather than all of them. What solutions have you already attempted? I haven't done much, so far. I tried disabling (not completely uninstalling, mind you) every mod I have but, even with only Skyrim.esm, Dawnguard.esm, Dragonborn.esm, and the three corresponding unofficial patches active, I continue to CTD. This might indicate that the problem lies in the data files for one of my mods. Something which replaces one of the original vanilla files, maybe. Again, I don't know what to look for -- if it were a mesh or a texture, why would it only cause a crash when I hit a loading screen? I only just got my Skyrim relatively stable after a week of tweaking and troubleshooting my (admittedly bloated) mods. I'm not exactly eager to start over from a fresh install. I would honestly rather just cure my Lycanthrope and become a Vampire Lord instead! This topic is my last-ditch effort to save my beloved Vampire/Werewolf crossbreed. If anyone has run into this issue themselves, or has an idea of how I might isolate the catalyst, I would be thrilled to hear it! :3 Any additional information? Nothing else comes to mind. I'll post my load order inside the spoiler, just in case. So, a few days of trial and error gave me nothing at all. This bug has been one hell of a mystery, even in a game notorious for difficult-to-diagnose glitches. Before I get to the root of the problem, I must modify my original assessment. It doesn't depend on being a Werewolf, after all -- it also happened as a Vampire Lord. So the CTD occurs when the character is transformed... or it might have something to do with whether certain types of controls are enabled or not. The exact catalyst isn't clear, because I wasn't able to solve this problem using the usual hierarchy of troubleshooting. In the end, blind luck is what cracked the case. I happened to be experimenting while my second monitor -- which is pretty much always on -- was unplugged, and I found that I couldn't duplicate my CTD. I still have no idea why, but it seems like this particular CTD only occurs when the following criteria are met: Your computer has an active second monitor, either duplicating or extending your desktop. Your character is transformed into a Werewolf or Vampire Lord. (Will test this with the Undeath mod, soon!) You are attempting to enter or leave seemingly random areas of the game. There it is. I have no idea why or how. I've never had a problem playing skyrim with a second monitor active before, but something changed in the last few months that brought this bug screaming into existence. For now, I'll just be happy that I can play my Werewolf/Vampire hybrid without worrying. ^-^ Hopefully, this thread will help anyone else who happens to encounter this bizarrely specific bug.
