CTD when trying to open labyrinth

Everything is going good.  I listen to the ghosts and then they disappear going into the labyrinth.  I go up to the ceremonial door and click "E" to access it.  The "torq" comes out; knocks twice and then a (very) brief switch to a loading screen and immediately to desktop.   Why oh why does it have to do this on such an important location?  This is where I am to get the Staff of Magnus to go back to the College and defeat that bastard Ancano and save the college and the rest of the world.  Can anyone help me with this?  I have tried going to other places and doing other things and then returning and still get CTD.

Help please.

You know what?  I decided to just skip the whole Winterhold College deal and come back to it later on.    Uh, what's a papyrus log?  Yes, I am vey new to all this.

Try using the console command "coc" to get inside. If something bad happens, then it may be a mod related problem. Then again it can be a rare "fixed crash", too. A specific point in the game where it definitely crashes. They are very rare among open world RPG, though. I ran into it twice. One of which was in Skyrim. Every time I tried to get close to entrance at the Labyrinthian, the game simply crashed. Only fix for this kind of crash is always a new game. That is if you are willing to o everything you just did all over again.

Thanks for the tip.  I'll remember that when I get back to quests for College at Winterhold.   Doesn't "coc" need a location to go with it?  What would be the location for this situation?

Here is a copy and paste from a website about how to turn on papyrus and where it is etc.

1.  First, Enable Papyrus Logging by opening your Skyrim.ini file located at [YourWindowsUsername]\Documents\My Games\Skyrim\Skyrim.ini

2.  Find the [Papyrus] heading (or if it doesn't exist, create it at the end of the file) and add the following:

[Papyrus]
bEnableLogging=1
bEnableTrace=1
bLoadDebugInformation = 1

Now, Papyrus is enabled!  Now what?

3.  Enter your game.  If it crashes to desktop, hopefully it will log the errors you've encountered.  If this is the case skip ahead a bit to step 5.

4.  Play the game for a while.  When it starts lagging up or giving you problems, open console by hitting the ~ key (or `, depending on how you look at it) and type 'dps' without the quotes.  This will dump a log file to your My Games/Skyrim directory.

5.  Open up [YourWindowsUsername]\Documents\My Games\Skyrim\Logs\Script\Papyrus0.log
(the newest log will always be appended with a 0)

On a side note I had the same issue with another quest. The Companions when you first turn into a werewolf would crash for me 100% of the time. I never did find out why. Like you I eventually gave up and did other quests I have not yet gone back to try again.

Hey I want to thank you all for your fine-sounding advice.  I will certainly give them a try when I get back to all that Eye of Magnus stuff if I need to. I have found that (sometimes) when something like this happens repeatedly to just go on and do something else for a while and then go back to where the problem was and it is fixed.  We'll see.  Right now I'm just roaming around putting locations on the map before I go back to Riften and take over the Thieves' Guild.  Thanks again.

please if got "fixed" click at option "mark like solved" or something like that (just author of topic can see), so if another person get same problem just need look at your best decision marked like solved and do same thing.

It is not solved.  I just put  it on hold for a while to give my brain a rest.
