silly question, how far can i go right before preston takes over sanctuary?

Want to just avoid him generally but also absolutely want all the loot/armor/weapons/etc.

I'm assuming I can do the whole battle scene and then once it's done I just can't speak with him inside? So just don't go inside after the deathclaw and I'm good?

As long as I can get the PA and minigun and dip...

AFAIK I think Preston and his crew only leave the Museum after killing the Deathclaw and talking to him.

Easiest way to accomplish that, would be to get the fusion core from under the Red Rocket where you meet Dogmeat. Then head to Concord, and go to the church next to the museum. Get to the roof of church, then make a running jump onto the tail of the vertibird. Remember to save before you try, as the fall damage will kill a low level character.
