I just recieved my MSI 290x gaming OC videocard and did a simple benchmark with my old 7970 vs 290x.

UNIGINE VALLEY windowed 1920x1080 resolution.

I choosed this resolution becouse my 7970 can barely manage 2560x1440 resolution.

AMD 7970 asus DCII standard OC

AMD 290x msi gaming OC mode 1040mhz

290x win 8.1 result.

3DMark skydiver.

Did nothing special just install latest driver win7 64bit ultimate.

CPU 3770K Intel OC to 4.2 ghz

Memory Corsair 16gb 1866mhz platinum

PSU Corsair 850 gold

Results 7970:

Well 290x costs like twice as much, so its not really a surprise :D

No payer 385 euros for 7970 back in 2012 and 290x MSI gaming OC edition is 522 euros with 2 free games Hitman Absolution and new THIEF game.

And its not about how much it cost im happy this card is doing so well:)

That looks really good, I'd be happy as well :)

Now I just hope this thread stays civil.

Well this was while ago im now in full speed and im still VERY pleased with this card.

I have lately tested Metro Last Light all settings max ULTRA and 2560x1440 and not only looks the game realy good it also runs smooth with steady 50fps.

One down side is after 2 hours play and from map to map i get some frame rate drops i have to go out of game and login again so its normal again prolly my memory full with 2560 resolution?

But im very pleased.

Also Thief in max settings ultra 2560x1440 45-50 fps avarage steady no problems at all after 5 hours play. Looks also damn good this game.

Have little setback tho not eath breaking but still, i bought a second card for Crossfire but my second PCIE x16 is bloody broken so i can't run crossfire at moment my second card getting dust doing nothing lol.

Soon new hasswel boards comming with new hasswell  intel icore 7 comming in april ill have to buy a new motherboard and cpu damned:(

If i knew this would happen i would not have bought second card hehe.

Im OC not using my rig only for gaming i also test it with benchmarks thats why i bought second card to go xfire benchmark.

Well see how it go in april may then see if new i7 is good stock 4ghz cpu should be alot improved over 4770k.

New score both cards.

My first score with 7970 was some how wrong(see above) becouse i did a new test(gen1 MB cpu 920 i7core 6gb ddr3 1600 with 7970  and got huge difference for better.

And new score better optimized with my 290x(1040 mhz/1250mhz pcie gen3.

CPU not OC and videocard on MSI APP OC 1040

Still huge difference between both cards but this is more accurate benchmark score then i first published.

I took this benchmark with 1920x 1080p becouse i got many scores all ready and better run for AMD Asus 7970 DX CUII TOP

Score with 290x same benchmarksettings but 2x AA.

nice score

I am currently using sapphire's tri-X (toxic) 290x

i don't usually run benchmarks as it can be deceving compared to actual game playing. Since intel and nvidia seem to bench better than my amd built system, but when it comes down to actual gameplaying there is no difference between them.

Hngh!

Alright, now considering this as an upgrade from my 660ti. Im curious if me being an AMD 8-core user will hold it back, however.

using AMD FX8350 cpu which is an 8 core, and it doesnt hold the card back.

eats crysis 3 alive, god it looks awesome.

Yeh i was planning on buy that one its better for OC but it took so long before avaible i went for MSI instead.

Well currently ive kind of little problem ive not solved yet :(

When i reset my bios to default so i don't have any OC and i benchmark GPU-Z shows i run gen3.0 PCIEX16.

Got around the same score as shown above.

Got Ivybridge gen3.0 mb and CPU 3770k.

When i OC again stable safe 4.2ghz my motherboard seems somehow dont see gen3.0 anymore and GPU-Z shows gen2.0 PCEIX16.

I get slight better score 2points improvement :D  but not running GEN3.0 strange but when OC i somehow can manage to get GEN3.0 :(

Not that its bad i run bench and games very well and smooth but still my card can do alot better if GEN3.0.

3DMARK firestrike i should run around 9500+ score but im stuck at 9000+ becouse of GEN2.0.

This summer ill buy new motherboard hasswell Asus ROG extreme with new intel cpu hopefully i can then fully get potential of this card.

you mean the pci express 2.0 and 3.0?

whats your gpu temperature like?

290x models do run quite high, but i noticed most tend to throttle at the late 80s

mine under load come in at about 70-73 degrees, but mostly stays at around mid to late 60s for 95% of games, while using default fan profile.

nothing gonna really get the full potential yet, drivers are getting better and better all the time.

290x is really overkill at 1080p xD

thought about changing motherboard to a sabertooth and sticking in an amd FX-9590, but we will see :)

Yeh i mean GEN3.0 PCIEx16 when OC CPU my mb switch to GEN2.0 which should not happen.

My card runs between 65-79 celsius at 2560x1440p this is heavy load avarage it stays under 70 celsius.

14.2 beta driver already alot better then 14.1.

Im very happy with 290x its awesome card.
