spiritnoon Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 Now I have some nif files with unknown texture types. In Nifskope, I can see a texture list but no description there: How can I get to know the roles of the 9 textures? Normal? Diffuse? I'm trying to merge them into CK (for Skyrim) under TextureSet. Would anyone help me match those textures into this list: or I'm not good at English and hope you can understand. Many thanks!

EDIT: Judge's answer below is probably what you're looking for. Excellent!
judge0 Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 From http://niftools.sourceforge.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=3189&start=15#p21844 _n - normal map _msn - Model Space Normal map/Object Space Normal map _g - glow map _p - parallax map- these are parallax maps, however I haven't actually found a nif that has one hooked up to double check it's in the right slot and to see the shader set up... _e - environment cube map. _em/_m/_envmask/_envmapmask - environment mask map. ^ those are very certain. It appears that the texture set is exactly the same as the fallout version, except they added 3 extra slots at the bottom. So when you see something in the environment map slot, that is what it is, and environment mask is an environment mask etc. _sk - skin < probably same as fallout, same name, same slot. _s - shine/skin? | grayfoxbust_s.dds, dog_s.dds, handsmale_s.dds < this is used in a NEW unknown texture slot, second from the bottom, so have no idea what it is apart from what the map looks like (until the CK arrives and we can simply look at the label in the textureset entries) Anyway I think it is SOMETIMES a subsurface map 8) . There are maps with the _s suffix, and there are maps actually called somethingsubsurface.dds that use the same slot. ie textures\dungeons\caves\IceCaveSubsurfacetint02.dds. Frost Atronach shader set up for the curious. However, not always as can been seen, Some times it's set up in the skin slot, and seemingly interchangeable with a _sk texture, some times. Just depends on whether tha map looks like a _sk texture and is set up in the skin slot, or in the second from last texture slot. Also note the shader flag set ups vary between something as similar as dog and elk. Whcih use the same texture slots and num of textures, but they have _s and _sk respectively, even though they look like they are exactly the same sort of map, and look nothing like the _s map for the shader of the bodies.. _b - brush? | fur_b.dds, gauntlets_b.dds. Also used in the second from bottom slot. I have only seen a couple of these, they look like a diffuse map but are blurred and low res. So maybe some kind of blur refraction or blend map, from what I can see it is tied into subsurface map slot. Not sure at all. but I reckon tied into this whole subsurface map business. _d - < simply alternate version of the diffuse map..
