Gamer_Auto Posted February 18 Posted February 18 (edited) If you look at the Aedric and Daedric entities venerated by the denizens of Tamriel, you find that some will occasionally have similar spheres. Of note to this community are Dibella, Mara, Mephala, and Sanguine. For those in need of a refresher: Dibella and Mara share the title "Goddess of Love" within the pantheon of The Nine (though Dibella's should really be changed to "Goddess of Intimacy"), Mephala is associated with the act of sex, and Sanguine's sphere is that of hedonism and debauchery. With Mara and Mephala, there's an easy distinction to make. Mara's major defining aspects of motherhood and fertility, as well as her status as the patron of marriage, obviously implies a focus on heterosexual monogamy (regardless of that one ESO forum post that I know some people will point to; if we can't take Kirkbride's forum posts as canon, we have to extend that same standard to other people). Mephala's sphere being primarily intrigue, lies, and murder implies sex as naught but a tool of deception. But that then leads to Dibella and Sanguine. Dibella cares most about the quality of love (intimacy). But that then begs the question: what counts as intimacy in this case? Is it strictly physical, or does it involve romance? And in your pursuit of being a better intimate partner, when will practicing the Dibellan Arts lead the practitioner to the influence of Sanguine? Very often, the need to keep physical intimacy exciting often leads to kinky and sometimes dark places. And let's be honest, that's how we all ended up here on LL. So where's the line between Dibella and Sanguine? If romance counts as part of Dibella's sphere, does its addition help stave off the Daedric influence? Or is it inevitable that never "graduating" from Dibella to Mara (settling down with a single spouse) will lead into the clutches of Sanguine's depraved lust? Let me know what you think, and let me know if you have similar comparisons! Edited February 18 by Gamer_Auto
FauxFurry Posted February 18 Posted February 18 Sanguine is about solipsistic indulgence while Dibella is about sharing intimacy. That is part of the distinction between an Aedra and a Daedra.
Before this degenerates into a pseudo-theological discussion... divine beings don't inherently have a gender—they choose a physical form and can change its shape at any time—this applies especially to gender. Therefore, in my view, "assigning" Mara the responsibility for "heterosexual monogamy" is complete nonsense. Marriage in TES doesn't hold nearly the same peculiar, unique significance as in our book religions! The boundary between Dibella and Sanguine? Take a look at the "Sisterhood of Dibella" mod... and in my version of "Nirn" (in my blog story), the two have had a (sexual) relationship with each other since the creation of Mundus. Yup—I think they're completely conning their followers! Marriage in TES doesn't have nearly the same strange, unique status as in our book religions! - By the way, there's one important Daedric Prince missing from your list: Molag Bal... because vampirism is ALWAYS connected to sexual (intimate) acts! The Coldharbour ritual—in which purebred female vampires are "created"—is simply sexual rape on all physical and mental levels. For me, there's no moral difference between Aedra and Daedra in the TES world... both groups manipulate mortals - for both, mortals are merely a means to an end. The central "deception" already takes place in the main quest of Skyrim... the player "kills" Alduin in the Aetherius realm of Sovngarde. What is his function in the construction of the TES world? His name, "End-Time Bringer," is programmatic - he is meant to DELIBERATELY bring about the end of the world. But why did the "God of Time," aka Akatosh, create such a being (his "son")? ... Because the boundaries between Mundus and Oblivion dissolve after a certain time... and even the power of all "divine beings" isn't enough to prevent this. But why did the "God of Time," aka Akatosh, create such a being (his "son")? ... Because the boundaries between Mundus and Oblivion dissolve after a while... and even the power of all "divine beings" isn't enough to prevent it. The end of the "calpa" is always inevitable - the universe (that is, everything "within" Aehterius) needs a new beginning... and the "reset button" for that is Alduin. If you eliminate Alduin, a chaotic collapse of Mundus is inevitable! So, whose interests are you playing into if, as Dragonborn, you eliminate the "Eater of Worlds"... who, by the way, also destroys (resets) the Daedric realms? It's funny how you release a game with a main quest that contradicts the established lore of the game series. 1
Karkhel Posted February 18 Posted February 18 (edited) I feel like the passive corruption from just regular vanilla acts being commited while a fun trope in porn games and skyrim mods, isn't at all realistic, and if someone actually treats IRL sex that way (not saying you do) it's a weirdly puritan outlook that should be pointed at and laughed at. Someone on a different porn game site whined about groping in a video game giving less corruption than watching a consensual sexual act being unrealistic, when that's the actual realistic conclusion. It's more that you falling into debauchery too much might peak daedric prince's curiosity. The prostitutes don't have a corruption bar passively going up from missionary or doggystyle sex, but if they delved into truely depraved stuff THEN they might cross paths with sanguine. In my opinion it's purely a matter of intensity of the debauchery rather than quantity. If a wife having sex with her husband 100 times isn't being corrupted then neither is a prostitute having 100 clients once. Let me remind you that prostitution in the context of diabella is not the kind of prostitution like in medieval europe. It's actually a normal, well respected (because it's even tied to religious worship) and regulated work. Daggerfall has them out in public without any mods. Edited February 18 by Karkhel
Certain general aspects of this game have nothing to do with our (i.e., European and North American) "Christian" worldview – the developers have borrowed heavily from the mythology (in terms of "world construction") of South and East Asia. I've already pointed out the cyclical rise and fall of Mundus in this context... a great deal of this is embedded in the "underlying structure," and the "Viking world" in Skyrim masks it all. Instead of arguing with moral concepts from the "Old Testament", one should instead use the Indian Kkamasutra for a discussion. 😇 1

I am a bit disappointed that the Nords of Skyrim resemble real world Vikings strongly enough that some people mistake TES 5 for some sort of historical fiction at times. The Aedra and Daedra in concept come across as being embodiments of the Greek Virtues/Vices of Excess, Moderation and Deficit more than Christian virtues even if they do not quite have the complete set accounted for. Love/Lust is one of the few things that do have the full 'trinity' present in the Elder Scrolls series cosmology, interestingly enough, even if they did not survive the conversion fully intact. If Mara were a prudish goddess of chaste love, then maybe it would be close to a one-for-one comparison. 1

That is part of the distinction between an Aedra and a Daedra. So we could say that there's an aspect of "purity" to it. Dibella requires mutual pleasure while Sanguine is more about one's own pleasure. But is that all? Like I mentioned before, could romance play a part? Because from what I've read, being adherent to Dibella's teachings doesn't necessarily equal prostitution (but to be fair, we don't exactly have a lot of in-game information to go off of; as Bethesda has opted to keep The Nine more mysterious than the Princes of Oblivion). There's more to intimacy than just the physical. There's emotional intimacy as well. Could romance and proper courtship also fall within Dibella's sphere? 16 hours ago, Karkhel said: I feel like the passive corruption from just regular vanilla acts being commited while a fun trope in porn games and skyrim mods, isn't at all realistic, and if someone actually treats IRL sex that way (not saying you do) it's a weirdly puritan outlook that should be pointed at and laughed at. True, but like I mentioned in my original post, the need to keep things exciting is ever present.I n real life (and in lore), you don't have a "corruption bar". That's game mechanic shorthand for something that takes a long time. By doing the same things until they become routine, you become accustomed to them. That makes them lose potency, lowering their effect on your arousal. Diminishing returns, as it were. This is what drives investigation into kink. And this starts small. A little ribbon around the wrists, a playful spank and a teasing nibble sprinkled in for flavor. But then that also becomes routine, and you delve deeper. How else can you be tied up? What if those smacks were a little harder, those nibbles turned to bites? Then that gets stale and you look again. What other materials could you bind yourself with? What if you started hitting other parts of the body? What if your partner dug their nails into your skin? Then that gets stale. You've never tried binding your neck before. What if you combined hitting and clawing? Maybe it'd be fun to have your hair pulled. Stale. What if you made the neck bindings a little tighter? We could use a small flog to hit and scratch at the same time. You want your hair pulled harder, such that your head moves. Stale. And so it goes until you become a full on BDSM masochist, and only a BDSM sadist can satisfy you. Then even your sadist friend can't satisfy you, so you start daydreaming. Is it your imagination, or did that wolf you saw on the edge of the forest the other day look oddly handsome? Every time you pass by the stables on the way to market, you can't help staring at the stallions. Those barmaids were whispering about vampires in the area; and the idea of being mind controlled by one makes you blush and wriggle in your seat. And this doesn't even need to start selfishly either, as people experiment to make their partners happy all the time.

That info was in the games but only the older ones. It's kinda how we have priests and monks and regular worshippers, it's just one of the ways of worship. I mostly make this and previous destinction because assuming prositution is sinful and corrupting is a very purtian christian view in a world where that is treated differently at least in this particular faith.
