Adult modding on linux?

Recommended Posts

I've been looking to get back in to skyrim and adult modding, and for performance reasons (8gb ram, integrated graphics) I've had to switch over to linux due to how much of a pain in the ass windows is to use with all the bloatware they try their damnedest to prevent you from removing. I'll be using other sources for more general help with linux modding, but has anyone here done any modding on linux in the past year or so? I've heard that MO2 "support" for linux is better than it was, and LIMO is a specific mod organizer for linux systems. There's also a lot of new-ish stuff in the modding scene I'm not too familiar with so I don't even know the most efficient way to start. I could always just tinker around until I get tired and bored and my game slows down to a very-unsexy crawl like I used to, but I'd like to actually play the game this time. I'm assuming I'll end up going with SE rather than LE, but even that I'm not sure about.

Big questions:

1. How well does MO2 work for you?

2. How well does Limo work for you?

3. Are there any external tools (in the vein of LOOT, FNIS, Bodyslide, etc) that have trouble on linux?

4. how hacky is the process? I've managed to write a simple script to boot an uncooperative game ONCE but that's about the extent of my skills (and i don't even remember how i did it)

5. (this is more general) Any tips for troubleshooting (in game and out of game)? All I really know how to do is process-of-elimination identication of broken mods and a single in-game testing procedure (tfc - tgm - player.setav speedmult 2000)

6. Any miscellanious tips?

Thanks for the consideration, I know this is a somewhat niche topic.

I use Vortex so can't comment, when I got back into Skyrim modding it was easier to set up and I just stuck with it.

Never bothered with it, IMO applications being native or not doesn't matter in the slightest, what matters is how well it runs.

Pandora had some issues for me. If you can't get the native version working, the Windows version works fine under Wine.

ENB can be problematic and very version specific, but I prefer Community Shaders these days.

Reshade can also be a pain, I ended up skipping it.

A lot of the frame gen and rescaling mods wont work, but you can still use Optiscaler and there's a Linux addon for Lossless Scaling if you want to use that.

The hackyness is mostly trying different version of Wine/Proton and all the pathing issues. Steam already sucks with where it puts things on the file system, and now add Wine and Wine managers like Heroic Launcher or Lutris and it gets annoying fast. Oh, and Vortex has it's own directory for profiles as well? Shoot me now.

Google sucks at search these days, but it's still useful for finding solutions.

Pretty much the same. It's not a huge deal but Linux is case sensitive so keep that in mind. It doesn't matter for Wine running Windows games/apps, but may become an issue when interacting with native apps.

Not sure if they ever fixed it, but RaceMenu has a malformed skee64.ini. In the section about Overlays they added a carriage return where there shouldn't be one, and it causes you to be stuck with the default amount of overlays no matter what values you add. It's a weird and very esoteric issue. Unfortunately doing things in Linux is sometimes like that, you get the weirdest issues.

Google a lot, also Reddit used to be pretty decent for finding solutions, not sure how it is these days.

I use an Arch based distro for context.

1. How well does MO2 work for you?

I had issues getting it to see skyrim correctly, i ended up adding it as a non steam game and run it through steam, works fine once set up.

2. How well does Limo work for you?

Never even heard of it till this question. So cant say.

3. Are there any external tools (in the vein of LOOT, FNIS, Bodyslide, etc) that have trouble on linux?

So theres a windows based dependency for what i use which is Nemesis + Bodyslide, if your on an arch based distro some people will be able to use the dependency without issue and for everyone else it will not work and theres no work around. The only solution is using a none arch based distro or windows to run these tools if you have this problem far as i can tell. I use an old laptop with windows, run the tools, zip them, transfer them with a usb, and install them as mods on my main linux rig. And i forgot the actual dependency but youll know it when you hit it. Sorry its been awhile.

The only issue i had was no voice audio in game. To fix it if it happens to you right click MO2 in steam, click properties, then in launch options add this without the quotes "PROTON_ENABLE_FAUDIO=1 %command%".

Usual modding good habits.

Im an idiot, so eventually i got chatgpt to help me troubleshoot while setting it all up, it took me awhile, but im an idiot im sure you'll do fine.

Do you know if ENBoost still works?
