Info about making a custom armor upgradable

How can I make my custom armor upgradable when using the armor workbench. Is there a guide out there? I would like to increase its armor stats.

Alternately, install ECO (Equipment and  Crafting Overhaul) - this will allow you to upgrade any armor/clothing in the game, even stuff that wasn't upgradeable before

most clothing and outfits cannot be upgraded at the workbench only the layered armor pieces can. Some clothing and outfits become available after doing some quests for the Railroad. to scrap clothing, outfits and armor, if they don't appear in the workbench menu u have to drop them on the ground in a settlement, go into build mode, target them and press the appropriate button to Scrap them, most give you cloth but a few outfits give u cloth and steel.
