Plugin limit "should" be 139, after that random issues happen. Even if I've read many comments and different numbers, I've read 139 so many times that I really believe it's definetely that. Especially when those posts are signed by big modders.

That would be too easy :)

Some people starts having issue just over 100, and I am sure one can effectivly build a specific game with 254 plugins, by choosing them very well.

The reality looks to be that there are a lot of internal resources that are in limited quantities, and as soon as you hit one of those limits your game breaks.

The only hard limit in the game is 254. Mod id 0x00 is reserved for FalloutNV.exe/FalloutNV.ESM, 0xFF (255) is reserved for the savegame/dynamic stuff, and the ones in between (0x01 - 0xFE) are available for DLC and other mods. There is nothing special about 139.

People tend to run into problems before then because there are other limits imposed that are lower, but depend on your machine hardware, how much stuff is in each mod you have enabled, total number of added loose files, and so on.

Personally, I always keep mine well below 100, and usually below 50.

Indeed, I remember crunching some numbers with someone a few months ago (DS or Hal maybe?) and part of it was related to processing power too, as I think we both had the same CPU and had the same "magic number".

I suspect the number itself will vary for different people and we'll never know for sure the "definitive" one.

I agree on the fact it depends by the resources (your computer), and I also have read things around LL speaking about that. I remember a nice and interesting thread about Zippy. But  while I really know you all are very expert in these things and I agree with what you say, it also sounds me very strange than the whole nexus forum spins around this perfect number "139". So, this is just what I've read around... Also, when I see a post telling about that number, which is signed "JIP", I really take it very seriously, JIP is someone I really have a big esteem

Link to comment

@CK, complexity of savegame will enter into it as well. Once you're approaching the limit, even a difference in the # of items in your inventory or that you've dropped in the world can affect it.

@AJ I don't know JIP, but I do know there are people out there who've gone beyond 139.

This person also didn't really understand the many differences that affect the limit, and thought they'd found it @150, as it would start having problems every time they went to 151. But still, many more than 139. Another person there did not run into any problems until getting to 208. Another guy got it at 176, but only if mods after 175 modified cells.

It's a complex problem and there is no single answer. What each mod does is just as important as how many of them there are.

Your best bet is to just keep it at 100 or lower.

It was a very old post (2010), but take a look at 3 posts before the end: it is dated february 2013. Luthienanarion (very nice modder, I like his CotW Expanded for example) addresses "around 140", he also says you can load 140 blank esp to trigger the bug. Recent posts always address that number, take a look here: http://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/1286060-over-modding/ where a moderator says the same. Can't find JIP's post, but it was in these last few days before Xmas.

By the way, just for curiosity. JIP's not only a very nice scripter, I love the way he always helps with his answers, a very great person in my opinion, here some of his very sophisticate works:

http://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/50468/?

http://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/49478/?
http://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/52129/?

Anyway, my feeling reading those posts is that someone found that magic number just lately.

Oh and I agree with you, I never stick with a ton of mods, when I have around 30 is good on NV, I never reached the same stability of FO3

EDIT: just to explain better what I usually read, they say "random weird things can happen", so I figure: if you loose texture on a weapon, it's easy to notice. But if a quest breaks, you usually think it's some conflict with another mod or some bug in the quest itself. If I were using a lot of mods, I would stay lower than that number, it's already hard to make a stable load order, I wouldn't like to find troubles that are coming from breaking some sort of ingame limit. They also say you can pass that limit merging mods, but I suppose it's obvious.

Link to comment

To be blunt, I don't put any stock in a number that has no reasoning to back it up, no matter how many people repeat the number. :) There is plenty of evidence out there that 139 is not the "magic" number, as other people are running fine with more than that, while some run into it much sooner.

To be clearer, I'm sure there are MANY "magic" numbers. The first one is 253 and is a hard technical limit with all the games; you can't have more than 254 ESP/ESM files active, and one of those must be the main game. There does seem to be *a* limit at 139 for some people, but the reason for it is unknown, and it doesn't apply to everyone. It could be anything from their version of windows to some hotfix or patch that affects part of the windows API the game is using, or anything else.

Without a real scientific investigation, we'll never know. So the simple thing is just to avoid "lots" of mods. 100 is a nice round number for me, so I always stay below that. :) Most of the time I'm at 50 or less, actually.

As for there always being bugs starting at 140 that just go unnoticed... if a bug happens in a game and nobody is around to see it, is it really a bug? ;)

Link to comment

Yeah you may notice issues at 151 or what ever go back to 150 and everything looks peachy, but take a few days of play to find there are still issues. Merging seems to help a bit. But it's a bit random as some people have reported the magic number being less when upgrading computers or operating systems til they install 4gb patch etc.

I'm sure at one point on my last PC I was up around 150 but then after a few reinstalls and changing my mod preferences it dropped to 130ish.

Link to comment

I still have never gotten the 4gb launcher for FONV to work properly. It launches the game ok, I don't see any difference in memory usage with task manager running on a different screen, and when I quit the game the 4gb launcher process always stays in memory. If I forget about that, when I remember and look in task manager there will be 10 or 20 or 50 of them going, one for every time I've launched.

So far though it doesn't seem to really matter. I'm running the mods I want OK, with ENB and NMCs textures, just fine with the normal nvse launcher.
