Problem with OBSE

Not sure where to put this, so I'll put my problem here until told otherwise. Basically I followed the install mod list in the order that was typed, but whenever I check the lovers mods on the data files and boot Oblivion up, it says in game that 'lovers requires OBSE'. The thing is, I have already extracted OBSE in the same folder as Oblivion.exe. I also tried using the OBSE launcher and it says "You are trying to use a Steam version of Oblivion. Steam users should launch the game through Steam, not by running obse_loader.exe. If OBSE fails to load, go to Steam > Settings > In Game and check the box marked "Enable Steam community in game", but I've gone to the Oblivion properties and I enabled 'the steam overlay while in-game'.

So, I'm lost at this point.

Maybe the USB drive?

You start the game with  Oblivion.exe ,  or if you are online you can start Steam and then the game.

Have you read my yellow Link below ?

Your link is what I followed. The vanilla Oblivion works fine it's only when I tick the mods or use the launcher do problems come up. I started up steam and attempted to use the launcher and I got the above error. I started the game in steam and ticked some of the lovers mods in the data files and I got the OBSE error. I'm probably going to follow the full uninstall instructions and maybe start over IDK.

obse_loader.exe  only if have a NO-Steam Oblivion version.

With a Steam version you start with Oblivion.exe or Steam (I don't have Steam, I don't know the name)

NEVER NEVER use the OblivionLauncher.exe ! ! ! it destroys your load order.  And in most cases a game will crash.

IF you are using steam try this: this is for OBSE problems on windows 11
im copying 2 methods i found that worked for me in this order.

  • Go to where you installed OBSE (should be the same folder where the Oblivion.exe file is)
  • Right click on the obse_loader.exe
  • Go to Properties > Compatibility tab
  • Set compatibility mode to "Windows 8"

Then Renaming obse_loader.exe to OblivionLauncher.exe allows you to load obse and the game instantly on steam, instead of loading the real launcher.

OK to clear some things up, here's what I did step-by-step. Boot-up steam > go to library > press play on Oblivion > press play on the in-game client > I loaded a working save file > after 7 or so seconds I get the OBSE error > I then tried a new save game > OBSE error again. From the attached file above, OBSE was clearly extracted to the steamapps/common/Oblivion folder as instructed. Only after all of this did I click on the OBSE launcher to see if it was working or not.

I added another mod to see if worked through steam, the NPC nude mod and it works fine. It just seems to be the lovers mod through steam which is causing issues for some reason.

I tried what you typed and no matter what, I still get errors. If I try to rename the obse_launcher, obviously it's going to say there's already "OblivionLauncher.exe" in this folder, so I deleted the og OblivionLauncher and set the obse_launcher to windows 8 compatibility I still get the OBSE error.

Did you rename obse_loader.exe to Oblivionlauncher.exe? that last point was so that obse_loader Replaces  Oblivionlauncher. Steam will try to always run file name Oblivionlauncher, we are tricking Steam to run obse_loader instead by renaming it as "Oblivionlauncher"

And do you use OBSE 21 ? not a newer xOBSE version.

Sometimes the xOBSE versions have issues. LAPF doesn't require these versions, and hardly any other mods do either. If you don't have a mod that absolutely requires xOBSE, use OBSE21.

Yeah I did rename it to Oblivionlauncher.exe and I got "error: cannot rename obse_loader. A file with that name already exists. Specify a different file name." I tried deleting the original oblivionlauncher and I still got the Obse error.

Sorry for leaving that part out.

Yes, the OBSE version I downloaded was OBSE21.

Where are the install instruction for this? Do I need to do a full uninstall and then install this? Sorry, what you said isn't very clear, it's kind of vague.

What instructions?
This is the Gold game folder.
-Install the game (Gold) - from virtual disk GE

-Copy the contents of the archive there

*Then you can make a hundred copies of Oblivion in different places and disks...

When I mean instructions, I just meant a more comprehensive step-by-step guide for where to extract (or is it irrelevant,) do I need specific software to run it (or I can I just launch the application asap,) what patch version is the gold edition and do I need to download a patch, do I need to a full uninstall of my steam Oblivion files (or are they irrelevant because they won't cause any conflict.)

I'll just extract the GE and go from there.

This is for the GE version of the game folder from the physical disk that I bought in the store 100500 years ago, I think this is the latest version...
Well, this is just my working folder with OBSE and Mopy (advanced mod org,.) + dll-fixes and jokes, like the camera, I think.

(I launched this version, with this folder even from Windows Remote Assistant on XP3 via Wi-Fi...)

Is there something I'm missing, because I'm lost at this point? (Have I not extracted properly, do I need to rename something...) because I use a laptop and when I extracted your gold edition to my USB drive, I clicked on the OBSE application and got an "CD-ROM Drive Not Found: Unable to find a CD-ROM/DVD drive on this computer."

I tried clicking on the oblivion launcher and got a "steam error: application load error 5:0000065434", which I'm guessing is coming from the launcher trying to launch my steam version of Oblivion.

When I boot up steam and leave it running in the background, the Oblivion launcher from your GE file will play Oblivion, but it's just my OG steam version, which still has the OBSE error.

So idk at this point. Fed up.

The only thing I can think of is extracting maybe to the steam folder, but I asked about where I should extract and you didn't respond, so idk.

*You bought the steam version, that's very good.

-If in doubt, save your folder with the game's executable files

-Steam its application in memory) is not needed for GE at all.

Now download the gold edition disk, download the emulator and install it
for example Alcohol - or whatever is popular with you, then connect it (virtually) and launch the game

Hey man I appreciate the effort and patience you have with someone new to modding, but every time I try downloading alcohol 120% or similar software, my antivirus quarantines it due to suspicious files. So, I'm just going to try and get OBSE to work somehow, someway with my steam Oblivion.

Well, my system has been working for more than 7 years with many alternatives.....
And I don't have and never had an antivirus, only a firewall from the 2000s...
You always need to approach any task as an engineer, that's all.
