The name of the file has a hint to that fact since it says 'tex' in the name. So you will need the TexMod utility. A simple google search of "texmod" will get you what you need. As for how the utility works, well it has been a very long time but I recall you either run the game through the utility or you run the utility along side the game and then you tell the texmod util to inject itself into the game. There will be an option in the util to select what texmod files or raw files you want to inject. When properly 'injected' into the game they will overwrite the textures in the game. These instructions may not be entirely accurate. I suspect they are mostly so but I haven't used TexMod since Mass Effect 2 was a 'new' game. 2

I managed to download a copy but I cant get it to install. Dont suppose anyone has any insight on installed old JREs on a modern operating system?

Did you try to run/install it with the most up-to-date java runtime. I know it says it needs an older version but there may be a chance it runs fine on a newer version. While each java update does run the risk of it removing obsolete sections of the runtime more often than not it is merely adding new content to the runtime. As long as the old functions and code that are required in the instructions of the reddit post are still part of the most up-to-date java runtime then it should still work. 2

You also mention that you can't get the older version of java installed. Is that because the installer detects a newer version already installs and so aborts the installation? If that is the case you will need to fully uninstall the version of java you currently installed and remove all other traces of it. Then you can try to install the older version of java and the installer should not abort since it won't detect a newer version installed. If that doesn't work I don't think I know of another work around to the java issue. 2

I wish you the best of luck. I know full well the joy and sorrow of modding older games. Sometimes mods break, tutorials get lost and tools stop working. It is probably due to these reasons that I have been compulsively saving all my mods for every game for decades. Almost one entire hard drive in my computer is dedicated to just mods for games.
