Random CTD

[IBAGadget]

Experiencing random CTD's. Sometimes the game will go for a couple hours with no issues, other times it will crash after only a couple minutes. Sometimes when entering/exiting dungeons/homes/stores what have you or when trying to fast travel.

 

I'll be totally honest - I have no idea how to read the Papyrus or crash log to determine what is the likely culprit.

That crash was caused by form id 0x00013489 "Gerdur" last modified by CS_Visions_N1.esp. This issue may be similar to this one. May want to go through the entire thread, despite it being somewhat long. Similar fixes/ideas may apply here.

wow. a lot to digest in that thread, and the one you linked to at the end. I do have a lot of mods that are likely messing with the navmeshes in the cities (JK's skyrim, Riften Southwoods district) two different Riverwood overhauls, with the patch to make them play nice with each other. 

 

As for Gerdur, CS Visions is a visual replacer, so it shouldn't be touching her ai at all, just physical appearance records. I wonder if the altered layout of Riverwood created by the two overhauls is causing the issue?

 

As far as the horse issue raised in the linked thread, and the apparently solved horse issue in the one linked from there, how do I go about finding and editing all those ref ID records?

I think the takeaway in general here is that this is a generic pathing issue. So basically any thing in the game which is moving from one place to another: be it Gerdur trying to get home, the hunter near Haemar's Shame trying to get to Helgen (presumably) or a mudcrab outside Whiterun strafing into the water. That's why one of my posts in one of those threads was something like "this may be one of the most difficult issues in Skyrim".

 

Based on your crash log I wouldn't say your issue is specifically linked to horses, unless Gerdur was riding a horse. I would be more focused on the mods altering the navmeshes between where Gerdur was when it crashed, and where she was trying to get to - taking into consideration what the pathing algorithm might be doing, like perhaps it was also searching for a quicker way to get there which involved going around the back side of the Sleeping Giant.

Going to have to be more specific than that, almost every object in the game has a reference id.

 

I would start with the following things, while keeping in mind the sort of things you saw in the thread (navmesh, horses, pathing, the name of the problematic ai package and what sort of package it was):

1. Inspect Gerdur in xEdit, make sure there was no AI package changes. Check which QUST records she's referenced in, make sure they're not from mods and adding packages.
2. Inspect the mods altering the Riverwood area navmesh. I don't know how to detect broken navmeshes, other than that deleted navmeshes are sometimes considered bad, so what I would do is just disable the mods that make the edits and see if it improves things.

 

Also it may not be such a bad idea to wait and gather more crash logs from other CTD events, like one from exiting a store in Windhelm, another from the inn in Markarth and a 3rd from fast traveling from Solitude. If these all point at Gerdur it gets kinda obvious where the issue is (not likely to happen, just an example) but if they are all different then you'd be wasting your time inspecting Gerdur and Riverwood.
