kurisu7885
First of all ,they're running Windows 7. Anyway the way they describe the problem is that their task bar is frozen, they can't seem to click on anything, and they tried a ctrl alt del restart using the task manager, but it wouldn't allow them to click on any shut down options. About all that seems to work is the start menu, but nothing within it it seems. I'm trying to help them myself but I keep running into multiple fixes and just getting confused. Link to comment
Ark of Truth
Try ending the process for explorer.exe, that's what I do. If that doesn't work it sounds like the OS is corrupted. Link to comment
kurisu7885
Well, it seems a reboot in safe mode didn't fix it either, she's going to try a new mouse first to see if it's just the laptop touchpad area that's fucked, if that doesn't work, I'll give your suggestion. Link to comment
Ark of Truth
If it was the mouse then how do you know the taskbar is working? Link to comment

kurisu7885
If it was the mouse then how do you know the taskbar is working? She's been able to open the start menu, and she can move her cursor, just she can't click anything, and she had right click for a while, so after she tried safe mode and still had the same problem, we're fairly certain that the touchpad area of her laptop might be fucked. Ark of Truth
Buy a cheap mouse and plug it in a USB port and see what happens. Only way you are really going to find out. Link to comment
Guest carywinton
It sounds too me like the drivers for the touchpad have been replaced during a Windows Update, this is a pretty common problem where M$Soft thinks it's drivers are better just because they may be newer. I would try to install the factory recommended driver from the computer manufactures web side or if you know the actual hardware vendor for the touch pad, get it directly from them. If this does not restore mouse pad functionality, then you are either dealing with faulty hardware or a corrupt OS. Ark of Truths suggestion for merely plugging in an inexpensive usb mouse is a valid approach at diagnosing a definitive OS problem, if the usb mouse does not respond then it is probably an OS problem or hidden process (virus) issue. The first thing a virus will do , usually, is stop your ability to kill it's process or service, this is done first by stopping the use of task manager. You also may want to run from a command prompt or from the "search Programs and Files" box after clicking on the start button, services.msc once this is running you should be able to look down the list of services and see one that looks odd and usually has no description. In most cases this is a rogue service or root kit and you can right click the service, choose properties and then disable it. I hope this helps , let me know if I can be of any further assistance. kurisu7885
Well, she got a new mouse and that seems to work fine. I'll make her aware of the driver problem regardless. Link to comment
