CTD WITH VANILLA FALLOUT 4, NO MODS HELP

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

I've deleted all my mods, deleted all my saves, turned off cloud saving, removed Fallout 4 completely from my mod managers, deleted the Fallout 4 appdata folder and reinstalled the game four times and it STILL crashes every five minutes. I can't even make it to Sanctuary on a new game and I could barely even make it through character creation until today. My specs are fine, I can run it on ultra but I run it on high instead, I don't use the high resolution textures pack and I have debris disabled. It worked just fine before, I don't know why it's suddenly broken even after all that. Any help would be appreciated, I've spent the past three days trying to fix this damn game.

Edit: LOOT is also saying my vanilla plugins are dirty and need to be cleaned which doesn't make sense because it's a fresh install and when I clean them I still crash, have to validate my files, find files missing and being re-acquired then LOOT says they're dirty again. It's a never-ending loop of nonsense and I don't know what else to do.

Edit: ReSaver is also telling me that there's an unattached instance in my saves. Cleaning them does nothing because it just comes back the next time I save. "InputEnableLayer: refid=FORMIDX:000000 (000001f9ec568870)" and "mq101questscript: *refid=DEFAULT:001ed86 (000001f96d5c2130)" are what comes up when I go to show unattached instances. I also have an undefined element with apparently a missing script "#defaultfontriggerenter# (000016c8) 6 frames (zero attached 0000000000000000)"

LOOT does not have as good as a reputation as it once did.   I have to ask, though, you  aren't new to modding so why would you think to clean your dirty main game files?   Was this something you did in the past with the main game files?    Basically, I never touch any main or DLC game files ever, just load them first.

Next, a unmodded game that is crashing every five minutes screams "driver update" but based on what you types about your specs, sounds like that isn't it.   The next thing is checking your cache swap file space (how much RAM do you have available and how much are you using).    Opening up your task monitor with the game running and when it is not might shed some light on some other process that is killing it (by taking all the space.)

Are you able to run other graphics intense games without any issues?

I read forever ago that you need to clean your masters so I've always just done it. All of my drivers are up to date and games like my HEAVILY modded Skyrim Special Edition and Cyberpunk 2077 run perfectly fine with no issues. Those are the most graphics intensive games I have I think.

Run any other game that needs decent horse power and monitor how your pc will behave. Second, uninstall FO4 completely, leaving nothing behind, clear the registry and delete the save game folder with where ini's and etc are, if it's still there as well. If you'll have no problems with other games running for an hour, install FO4 but on a different drive and test it again. Honestly, this could be easily CPU or GPU giving out, or maybe you need OS reinstall. Programs don't usually start crashing all of a sudden, something messed up.

My PC behaves fine with any other game I play and whenever I'm playing a game the only programs that are ever open is Discord and Steam, it's definitely not a resource issue. If it were my CPU/GPU giving out crashes would be happening on ALL my games, it's only Fallout 4. What do you mean by "clear the registry"? I've already removed all trace of mods, .ini files, saves, appdata, mod manager installations and management etc. There's no trace of anything from what I can tell, everything is gone. Every reference to the game, saves and mods have been deleted permanently.

The cleaning masters thing comes and goes. Current thinking (afaik) is you don't need to clean masters, unless you are using mods that require cleaned masters (and I think thats just dyndolod-ng, but not dyndolod 3).

Trying dropping graphics settings down from ultra to just high. The ultra settings turns on a few things that are known to cause random CTDs for some players.

If you are using a nVidia GPU, you might want to trying rolling back to v442.92, and see if it still crashes (after also doing everything else mentioned elsewhere in the thread), since there is (still) an annoying bug with anything version more recent that can cause CTDs with FO4 (which isn't affecting me on my current run, but did affect me on my previous run. With the same hardware. Bethesda games are weird.

My settings are on high, medium and low. Nothing is on ultra. Resolution is 1920x1080, I'm not stressing my system at all. Rolling back didn't help earlier today so there's no reason to expect it to now. These are the settings I always play on and it worked perfectly fine before.

Other things you can try:

Setting Fallout4 to run in windowed borderless mode

Removing from the <FO4>/Data directory any esm, esl or esp file that doesn't start with either Fallout4 or DLC (This will remove the CC content and any mods from the bethesda mod store). This may also require you rename/remove the <FO4>/Creations manifest files. You can put them back after.

Are you overclocking? Try without overclocking.
Disable Shadowplay

(Temporarily) disable anti-virus and see if crash still happens.

Set compatibilty options for Fallout4.exe: Disable full-screen optimisations
