SexLab and Devious Devices *VR* Installation

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Alright guys, this has been driving me crazy. VR support is pretty spotty for mods that have special animations, like SexLab and Devious Devices (and mods that depend on them); and where it's supported, it's often very confusing. I've tried other ppl's guides, and some worked, but there were *always* steps that were either unclear, ambiguous, or missed something important. I've spent a lot of time getting stuff to work, and I've got it down pretty close, with some pretty easy to follow instructions.

The only thing I'm not explaining here (yet) is Vortex Mod Manager. I'll probably add an explanation; but for now, I'm assuming you're using VMM and understand how to do basic mod installs with it.

I'm also assuming you don't have any mods installed at all. If you have any other mods installed *before you install these*, I can't guarantee SL or DD will work. I *strongly* recommend you start from a completely clean install of Skyrim VR, from an unmodded save. Also, don't try starting a completely new game with these mods installed - some will fk up the intro. Instead, start a new game, unmodded, then save when you first get out of the prisoner wagon. Then exit the game and start the mod installation.
I also recommend that when you have a completely clean Skyrim install, you make a copy of your Data directory, so that you can revert to a clean install later without having to completely redownload the whole darned thing.

I also recommend when downloading mods from Nexus Mods that you use the "Manual Download" button instead of the "Mod Manager Download" button. For a couple of reasons - 1) You'll have a locally downloaded copy in case your VMM download somehow gets lost and the original download link doesn't work anymore; and 2) VMM sometimes tries to keep mods up to date automatically when you use a Nexus Mods "Mod Manager Download" link,, and that can break things - These mods all work together pretty delicately, so any change to even one of them could easily break other mods.

So, some initial notes - disregard conflicts until I tell you to deal with them. I've attached screenshots of the conflict rules - I can't stress enough how important these are - if you don't have conflict rules right, this install basically won't work (or it'll have bugs). Also, this is my initial version of this tutorial; I have most of the links listed. But, if the links don't work, you should be able to find them if you google them.

Also - IMPORTANT - Don't worry about listed dependencies on any of these mods as long as the filenames or versions match. I've included *all* the dependencies in this list.

Also - even though Vortex lets you drop multiple mods at a time into the "Drop File(s)" section, *don't*. Install these *one at a time*. VMM is bad about "losing" mods when you drop a bunch at once.

I've also been told that JContainers 4.1.3 breaks Creature Framework, so you might want to get 4.1.2 (make sure it's the VR version - 4.1.2 should be almost at the very bottom of the "Files" page in the same link as listed below).

Important note for VR users who've never played Skyrim of any kind with mods: SexLab and SLAL do *not* have conversation options that will initiate sex; they're just frameworks and animations built with those frameworks. You'll have to install *other* mods after them in order to play or test sex animations.

Similarly, with Devious Devices, there's no dialog option or quest for getting tied up; you have to either: 1) install other mods that have shops or bondage quests; or 2) Get the book included in Devious Devices found in the library of Winterhold castle, read it, then craft devious devices from a crafting table.

If you really want to test Devious Devices early on, complete these install instructions, then install Laura's Bondage Shop, which can be found here: https://www.loverslab.com/files/file/6949-devious-devices-lauras-bondage-shop-13-jan-2023-v342/
Laura has a shop that sells bondage merchandise outside of Whiterun, not far from the Whiterun stables. If you're running from Whiterun to Whiterun stables, turn right at the stables and Laura's Bondage Shop is about a 5 or 6 second run down that path, on the other side of the road. I *highly* recommend this mod because it has a really excellent main quest that's pretty long, and a number of side quests, and with these mods installed, almost all of the content should run without issue until you reach the very end. There are also parts of the main quest where having sex is an option, so you'll be able to test SexLab with it as well.

Okay, so here's the list, in order of installation. If you see or encounter any problems, feel free to let me know:

    4. * Run BodySlide (64 Bit Version)
      1. Location is SkyrimVR\Data\CalienteTools\BodySlide\BodySlide x64.exe
      2. Click "Batch Build" button in bottom left corner
      3. Click "Build" in window that opens
      4. The first time you run it, BS will ask you to "Select Outputs", with a bunch of outfit options. The outputs are in groups. What you select here doesn't really matter much, except that selecting "HDT" options will enable outfits that more properly conform to touch physics.
      5. Run the outfits.
      6. This will take a while, even with a good system, because the last 20 or so outfits take anywhere from 15 to 30 seconds each to build. BS may bitch at you when it's done about sets failing - don't worry about it. It just means that those outfits may not conform correctly.
    5. * Run FNIS
      1. Location is SkyrimVR\Data\tools\GenerateFNIS_for_Users\GenerateFNISforUsers.exe
      2. Click the checkbox that reads "Skeleton Arm Fix"
      3. Click "Update FNIS Behavior"
      4. It may take a few minutes to run (like 2 or 3 minutes); you'll know it's done when the output window echoes something like "6937 animations for 21 mods successfully included (character)"
    6. * Use the "Manage Rules" button to apply conflict rules (Screenshots of rules attached)
    7. * Run Game
      1. Load Unmodded Save
      2. Wait until you receive no more messages (e.g. about MCM registration or mod installation)
      3. Save Game
      4. Load Save Game from above
      5. Skyrim will tell you about "calibrating" VRIK. Select "Headset Only" option - it's the best option IMO.
      6. Save Game again
      7. Quit Game
    8. * REINSTALL SL VRpatch Beta8 38 - test.7z and SL VRpatch hotfix for v38.7z, and use the same conflict rules as you used above.
    9. * Run Game
      1. Load last saved game (Continue should work fine too)
      2. Open MCM Menu for SexLab
        1. Click "Install" option
      3. Close MCM Menu and *wait*
MCM install of SexLab takes a while, but you'll be receiving messages every 10 or 15 seconds. You'll know it's finished when it tells you that it's finished installing (I'll add the actual message later; I can't remember what it was). On my 12 core, 32 MB, RTX 3060 Ti machine, it takes probably 2-3 minutes, so be patient.
      4. Save Game
      5. Load Save from Previous Step
      6. Register ZAP (Zaz Animation Pack) animations from MCM menu
        1. In MCM, open "Zaz Animation Pack"
        2. Open the "SexLab" submenu
        3. There should be a link that reads something along the lines of "Register" - click it
Unlike SLAL, if you exit the MCM immediately after registering ZAP, MCM shouldn't break. So you can exit ZAP and wait maybe 15-30 seconds. ZAP is usually pretty fast. I don't recall if it gives you a completion message.
      7. Save Game
      8. Quit Game
    10. JContainers VR-16495-4-1-13-1602690839.7z
      Source: https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/16495?tab=files
(Be sure to select the *JContainers VR* download)
    11. SLAL v1.6 SE.7z
      Source: https://www.loverslab.com/files/file/23737-sexlab-animation-loader/
    12. 76810071_SLAnimationInstallerPublic0.9.3.7z
      Source: https://www.loverslab.com/files/file/24128-sexlab-animation-pack-installer/
    13. * Run Game
      1. Load last save
      2. Open MCM menu for Sexlab Animation Loader
      3. There should be a "register" link - activate it and wait for 2 or 3 minutes. *Do not leave the MCM menu* because it could mess up MCM. If that happens, exit the game, and reload the save you just loaded.
      4. The "Register" link should change to "Registered". It may also give you a popup about being finished. You can exit the MCM then.
      5. These mods will work if you don't properly register SLAL and its dependencies from the MCM - you just won't have many animations.

So far, I've tested it and can confirm at least *some* of the animations work, and Devious Devices appear to all work.

1/27/23 - Added BodySlide and FNIS instructions. Added Devious Devices link. Added SLAL instructions. Clarified ZAP info. Updated rules screenshots, as previous were from an old install.

1/29/23 - Added note about JContainers, changed location of FNIS and BodySlide (which need to happen after Devious Devices)

Great walkthrough. I am just going through it now to see if it works. Quick question, when you run bodyslide what outfits and skins go in the top left corner? I am not familiar with bodyslide this will be the first time i've used it. Is it strictly necessary?

There's a button in the bottom left of Body Slide that reads "Batch Build". That's what you should use. I'll add that to the instructions later today.

It'll ask you to pick from many different options after you click that; doesn't really matter which you pick - but the HDT options are for certain physics mods, so you should pick HDT where it's available.

Really cool of you to provide a thorough walkthrough!

I do have a general question. In step 2 Item #3 You talk about running bodyslide and it taking a while to build the last 20 or so animations... I'm confused, bodyslide doesn't have anything to do with animations does it? Was  that note meant for the line below w/FNIS?

Sry, misstatement; I meant "fittings". I wrote that at like midnight so I was tired lol

JContainers 4.1.3 DEFINITELY breaks things with Creature Framework as far as I can tell. Recommend 4.1.2 ***VR***personally. Searching "Creature Framework JContainers 4.1.2" will provide evidence of this. I've tested it myself, if you get no registered creatures. I'd make note of this in your guide to save people frustration in the future.

Thanks, I'll take a look. Some of the items listed here aren't required for these mods, but for other mods that use these. I haven't fully reduced the list, and that's one that I haven't checked.

@Allen Harris Good to have an updated guide, thanks for your efforts, must have been very time consuming!

Eh, it was mostly just playing it a lot. I legit didn't think any of the good LL mods would work well with VR - but I've played, like, A LOT. And I started this as my own guide - just figured other might benefit from it too.

But thanks ?

Oh absolutely! I use Devious Devices too, I wouldn't recco it just for another mod's sake. JContainers 4.1.2 plays nice with DD/PAHE/DOM from what I can see.

I've never had it give me those messages before, so I don't know if it'll break anything. I recommend following the instructions on this page, then installing Laura's Bondage Shop. If you ask Laura to help with the shop a few times, you'll run into a situation where a creepy guy in Dragon Reach will try to pressure you into sex. That is the best way to test the animations that I can give right now

Just going through the guide trying to get this to work but run into a strange problem. FNIS doesnt create a 'data' mod after i run it in Vortex. I think as a result of this when I install sexlab in game it registers 0 animations. I've tried using with nemesis and same thing. Have you encountered anything like registering 0 animations before?

BodySlide and FNIS aren't mods in the same way as the others. They're applications. You install them with Vortex, sure - but they place applications in your data directory that you're supposed to run.

BodySlide is SkyrimVR\Data\CalienteTools\BodySlide\BodySlide x64.exe

FNIS is SkyrimVR\Data\tools\GenerateFNIS_for_Users\GenerateFNISforUsers.exe

Bodyslide conforms outfits, and FNIS conforms animations.

Yes sorry i should have been clearer. I'm sure i've installed FNIS properly but in vortex after you run FNIS (through vortex) a 'mod' does usually pop up in your mods section for you to enable. It's usually called FNIS DATA but recently it's stopped appearing. Wondering if it's a windows security issue or something you've encountered before

Hmmm...no, never seen that one. Did you try manually extracting it? It doesn't actually have to be installed from Vortex I don't think

Tried that thanks but still no luck. I've given up with vortex for now and luckily Nemesis seems to work alright. I've followed your steps and tried installing 163 BETA8 instead of 163.7 and that seems to properly register the animations for me. I've managed to get most of it working except for DD and ZAZ animation pack dont seem to show in my game anywhere even though theyre clearly noticed by Nemesis. I'll try and figure it out later lol

Thanks for your speedy replies

Sry, I haven't seen that one before.

Why do you list VRIK twice in this guide? Once for the loverslab page, and then again - for the same version, on the nexus page.

It's not listed twice; there are 3 different builds. It's explained more in depth on the source pages. It's possible one may not be needed; I never tried it without (testing SexLab with VRIK is kind of a pain in the ass bc it takes a lot of time)

I can't get this to work, not with the current versions available at least - I believe it's outdated.

Has anyone been able to get it working recently? It's been a real pain, nothing seems to work for me!

I tested it as recently as a week ago and it worked, but at least some of the files were local copies. What's going on that isn't working exactly?
