also normal sse and sse vr are identical besides the 10 hours i just dropped in creation kit specifically for vr version, i loaded sse ck at one point and it had a fit acting like i was trying to reinstall skyrim as a whole like i said idk if its trying to force normal sse to be the prefered launch now for some reason

Not sure what "failed to obtain module handle" would be. It could refer to another dll, or the exe itself, but I can't think of any reason for why it would do this, and critically fail if it can't. But if you seriously didn't change the game or any of its files, then Steam probably updated the game for ya.

Edit: Reddit says disable Windows Defender (or any Anti-Virus in general). While a terrible idea, that definitely explains why getting a module handle might fail.

Edit: Also what engine fixes mod are you using? The one I know of is called EngineFixes.dll, not "engine fixes.dll". Gonna need a link to that to see if it has public source code.

Like traison suggested. Your game was most likely updated. Check your game version.

* 1.5.97 is standard SE

* 1.6.353, 1.6.629 or 1.6.640 is AE version

If game being updated is root cause to problem, then you should prevent Steam from updating game automatically. This can be done in Steam settings by selecting a time period when Steam is allowed to download patches. Select a time period when you are usually not online. This will affect all your Steam games, so you will have to manually start download of patches (bottom part of game library window, click on Administer downloads), for the games you actually do want updated.

If you need to downgrade game then search Nexus site for "downgrade". Huge selection of downgrade options available there.

it was engine fixes for vr https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/62089    I have identical sse and vr games with all the same mods and everything, I tried to dl the ck for vr version of skyrim since i was going to start using vr skyrim more often, i put a good 10-20 hours with of effort into a mod i like on the vr ck, and at some point i had to open the ck for normal sse to see something, once i did that it tried reinstalling the ck for normal sse skyrim through steam and changed something in the vr version of my game and vr skyrim says that now, wont load at all, i actually have working versions of the ck for both sse and vr but vr skyrim the game will not load anymore, my only hope being taking these mods in question extracting them perfectly re-porting them back to sse uninstalling everything related to skyrim vr reinstalling all 100gb of skyrim vr then probably from then on out im assuming only ever use the ck on one version of skyrim or else that all will happen again, not sure if that actually is the problem, also before i had the ck installed through bethesda launcher, and apparently it changed at somepoint and installed the ck for normal sse on steam when i tried launching ck for sse after getting the vr ck

Found Relocation.h in CommonLibVR, which is a part of EngineFixesVR. The dll name still doesn't match. Regardless, I went through the source code for the mod you linked, and neither Engine Fixes nor the dependency lib contain any part of error message "failed to obtain module handle". So, wrong mod, or yours is outdated and no longer matches the code on github.

Still going with the idea that Steam updated your game. Why not check? It's such a simple thing to do. Just compare the version compatibility of SKSE and/or Engine Fixes to your current Skyrim exe version. Your answer is probably right there.

Edit: As for reinstalling everything and not installing both CKs at once again. That probably doesn't help as if it's a game update, then you'll just end up in the same place.

how do i check my current skyrim version? is it under properties after i right click? i tried verifying files of skyrim vr on steam, i just downloaded Enginefixes vr, and re downloaded skse vr aswell, also your right about the update i think, it says the last update was 13 days ago which i dont even remember seeing that update, usually i try making sure nothing updates unless i want it to because of AE, but it was probably about 13 days or more since i had last tried launching skyrim vr

my actual normal sse game says its 1.5.97.0 and that still loads everything fine i believe, i was just able to get ingame and atleast walk around riverwood and whiterun but the vr version is what was giving that error

Alright, so now verify that SKSE and Engine Fixes are compatible. 1.4.15.0 seems to be the version to go by.

Also, you did get "part 2" of the engine fixes right? It contains more dll files that seem to be required.

As for steam patches, don't trust the last update date. Steam has been doing stealth updates for years. A more reliable (or perhaps definitive) source of update information is SteamDB. If the manifest id changes, a change to your game/program has been made. As for finding the various id numbers, those you'd probably have to google or fish out of the steam apf files like I do. Simply searching for skyrim vr on steamdb suggets vr was last updated 2 years ago, which I doubt. There may be more than one package id involved there.
