I'm having some new game trouble.  I tried starting a new game and starting running into CTD's in the opening scene.  When using Start Me Up's option to skip the initial prewar scene, it crashes immediately.  When choosing to go through the full vanilla opening, it crashes right after interacting with the baby.  When selecting the "this is a dream" option, everything is fine.

Here's the weird part.  I already ran with this same exact load order with only a few additions successfully a few weeks ago.  There were no issues then.  I already tried disabling the new mods and no luck, same problem.  Can some one help me make sense of the buffout log and papyrus log so I can figure out what has broken?

Let me guess, you're running windows 11? I had this problem a couple of weeks ago right after an update by microshit. I shut down system guard, shell experience and aggregate host and the game started running fine. It seems something windows did messes with alt start. Even after I did this and got the game running it still constantly crashed. I eventually had to drop alt start. Now everything works again. I'm using skksynthetic player and skk fast minutemen without any trouble but Alt start just won't run without crashes.

I declined the upgrade to Windows 11 but I do remember an update that windows put out.  It'll really suck if Start Me Up has it's most useful feature borked.  I'm going to try running through just vanilla without it to see f that has anything to do with it.

Nope, still crashes.

Yeah mine still crashed on vanilla. Had to delete the ini's in the mydocuments\game folder and verify the game files before it would work, then after vanilla worked I reloaded my mods 5 at a time and it worked right up to start me up. I have 300+ mods running so it took a LOOOOONNNNG time to do. :(

No dice.  Whatever is going on has affected buffout and address library.  Deleting the ini's enables me to only start a game by skipping the entire opening, requiring an alternate start mod to do so.

Crashing as soon as you interact with shaun (and subsequently trying to use start me up and crashing on entering the cryo pod)  is indicative of the June2022 BodyTalk issue.  See the below thread for the tracking information of this crash.  Grab the latest BodyTalk, Delete any built male meshes you have, Batch Build the male clothes again, and that crash should be resolved.

I think that got it.  Any idea on why it would work fine one time, then completely bork everything up afterwards?

i have ctd every time i try to level up on the pip boy, otherwise no problem,but... i do not use BodyTalk, instead i use Atomic Muscle.  I wonder???

i have done all the usual fixes to no avail, including a complete re install after uninstall with Steam followed immediately wipe of all files in every location with the trusty delete key.

happens without mods, with mods, while fixing coffee (yep, seriously just sitting and watching the screen for two minutes, then try and  --- boom -- gone).  and i wanted to mod this game and build my own mods as well, but if you can't depend on the pipboy ----- and apparently can't depend on the game engine either!!!

ok -- RANT OFF --

You need Buffout.  It's in the guide how to install it.

Also just to clarify, Buffout specifically fixes the game crashing when opening the pip boy as well as some other crashes, and when you do crash will supply a crash log file.  If you think you already have Buffout installed, you actually don't because if you did you would not be getting that specific crash.  :)

@Sgt. MargeThanks for the information.  I do indeed have buffout installed, but never really verified i did it right, in fact it has been installed for so long (ie. many multiples of new starts and mod changes) i totally ignored it.

The most commonly missed thing needed is xSE Preloader, Putting it and the other file that comes with it in the game folder, editing it with Notepad ++ (not windows notepad)

Make sure your buffout is the latest version (It was updated a couple months ago), as that one no longer requires "TBB" and takes one step out of the old process making it slightly easier.

Final note;  I am an idiot!

Bugthesda has nothing on me... i failed to check for updates to numerous mods, messed up my custom ini settings and so much more.

well, it is still bugthesda's fault, with a lot of help from steam and ME. amazing i got it to work at all.

now back to ruining my game with my own mods.
