The possible future of animations

Heyho,

currently animation, especially in games, is something that (imho) still sucks. Either you have a very limited set of realistic looking animations that are created by motion capture, or you have many animations, but they look robotic and repetitive AF. (Sorry to all animators of you ?)

Now, what do you think about this: "ASE: Large-Scale Reusable Adversarial Skill Embeddings for Physically Simulated Characters"

And, to make more clear, what that's all about:

As this is a mixture of motion capturing and computer generation, done by an AI, it looks realistic without the need of capturing tons of motions.

What do you think, as this comes from nVidia, when will this become part of games and what do you think could be done with this?

I personally imagine really observable progress, not by skill points or something, but in the handling of your weapons itself. Take the visualization in the video:

- Pre-Train the movement with sword and shield

- Take several stages of training as milestones (maybe, when the avatar at least can walk ^^)

- Put those milestones as sets in the game

- Interpolate between those sets to generate a distinct skill of movement

Like this, I think you really could SEE your character progress in handling a sword!

Maybe, in the future it could even be possible to introduce AI motions into games (similar to DLSS for upscaling): Pre-train an AI to move and put the finished data into the game to create fitting and realistic looking animations for all scenarios during run-time!

And I think for the adult animations, this could be used as well; nVidia already has shown another tool to extrapolate motion capture from videos, and there's more than enough porn vids out there to extrapolate from ^^
