So Skyrim just randomly deleted itself huh?

Yeah I kid you not. My Skyrim just randomly deleted itself of my machine.

I recently reformatted my machine,  Steam and all the games installed using it are kept on a separate drive due to this. I reformatted the Windows drive, installed all the updates for Windows etc. I rebuilt Steam using the instructions given to be by support which was to delete all the files and folders except Steam.exe and Steamapps and to keep Backups if I had that folder.

Did all that and everything was fine, played Skyrim for a couple of hours. I decided to use the Creation Kit but got a error saying it was not installed right, fair enough. So uninstalled the Creation Kit and reinstalled it again., I go to launch the Creation Kit and nothing happens. After two attempts I go to the Skyrim folder to launch it that way and to my horror all files except custom scripts and all have been deleted, including custom ESPs!!

Luckily enough I have a Steam backup and a backup of all my mods which were installed but I want to know what could of caused this to happen in the first place.

Anyone else experienced this or heard of it happening?

All the cases I have read about it say that when you uninstall the Creation Kit there is a chance that Skyrim can be uninstalled as well. Which in this case seems to be what happened.

Man, this is bad news and really messed up! I never touch the CK installation because I've read a couple of times it will delete ESPs and like in your case, scripts...

Best of luck restoring it all!

Maybe when you install CK first and then Skyrim, maybe Steam sees the Skyrim and Data folder where CK is installed in as folders belonging to the CK and not Skyrim (because it was created when installing CK), so if you delete CK, Skyrim gets deleted, too. That would be my guess. Maybe someone try it.

Did the same think for New Vegas just two minutes ago.

Same way as Skyrim but this time with GECK. Uninstalled GECK and reinstalled it to make it work again and bam no more Fallout New Vegas. This shit is getting odd. My only guess is it knows that the game has changed slightly when it rebuilt itself again.

It's not the CK it's Steam useless uninstall scripts. Good thing I have New Vegas Ultimate Edition on Disk.

I installed the Creation Kit yesterday after reinstalling my backup and did have a issue with it. My guess is it's something to do with that the CK noticed  a change in Windows as it was formatted and that's what caused the issue.

I just Steam a support ticket, let's see what they say.

I am completely done with this game... I mean, it's been really buggy in the past, but deleting EVERYTHING!? That really takes the price.

And I didn't have a backup, so lost all my mods. weeeeeeeeeeee

Don't get too discouraged, a simple hard drive failure the game is on can do the same thing. I've actually taken to telling my computer to start backing up [steam] to a USB external drive about once a week or so, since I lost over 5 months of work on my Celestials mod and had to start all over again due to a hard drive that died. Your best bet is to just tell windows to back up your steam installation about once a week or so while you're sleeping to a different drive, so that anything like this doesn't happen again.

Ok so I was going to make sure I had the latest CK and files.

so I went to tools in steam and told it to uninstall the Creation Kit

then I told it to reinstall the Creation Kit (fresh download)

clicked on the creation kit icon and it returned "missing skyrim.exe"

I said WTF...

went to my Skyrim directory and the ONLY thing there WAS the fresh install of the CK, a whole 88 megs

so uninstalling the CK deletes your entire Skyrim game and ALL files.. it didnt even leave my mods.

SO

uninstalling Skyrim leaves your mods in place

uninstalling the CK leaves nothing in place...

so don't uninstall the CK if you have it
