Spell modification/Creation help?

Hi folks, First off I'm a super noob when it comes to altering games... in fact this is my very first attempt, so please don't lynch me for being stupid lol

I'm trying to take an existing spell that targets self only and make it an aoe or even targeted burst spell.  I've duplicated the spell in question and am trying to change the targeting from "self" to "area" but the option is unavailable (greyed out)... the only thing about the spell I'm trying to change. besides it taking both hands instead of only one lolol  Is this "project" a bad start point?  seemed basic enough for a first project. I've tried the video tutorials and the CK tutorial page but I can't find info that helps me solve my issue anywhere.  I simply find it hard to believe that no one has done something like a "waterbreathing mass" spell so followers don't drown or "muffle mass" so they aren't glowing beacons of aggro draw, but no matter how I search I can't find anything (to be real it's neither of those spells I'm working with,  just using them as examples. lol) any useful help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

You'll probably need a new Magic Effect.  Spells are just the mechanism of delivery for magic effects, which are a lot more versatile of a form type. Note the difference between Paralysis and Mass Paralysis if you double click the 'Paralyze : Paralysis' effect listed in their spell menu:

Effect from Paralyze (Aimed, single target spell)

Effect from Mass Paralysis (AOE)

They're ultimately the same spell but mass paralysis is the one you want to imitate. This is the ParalysisFFSelfArea Magic Effect's menu:

It's almost identical to ParalysisFFAimed, but the fields circled in red are what make it an AOE instead of a targeted spell. (Really just the Area field, the Explosion field is just visual). So in order to modify your spell, you want to duplicate the spell itself, but also duplicate the magic effect it's applying, give that magic effect an area, then point your spell to your new magic effect instead of the original one.
