ttts1 Posted December 29, 2021 Posted December 29, 2021 I can't figure out what is causing this, looking for ideas: I recently noticed that the written dialogue text is missing when I am in a conversation menu with an NPC. The last line from an NPC will appear when the conversation ends and the menu goes away. This affects all dialogue from NPCs regardless if from a mod or vanilla, voiced or Fuz Ro D-oh - Silent Voice mod. I have no mods that affect the conversation menu framework (unless RDO does?). I can't figure out the cause. I didn't seem to have installed a mod that I can figure out causing it. It's occurring on 2 different MO2 profiles with extremely different mods. The 2nd of them hasn't had a change in mods in 3 weeks or so. The problem is that all silent dialogue from Fuz Ro D-oh related mods, so many of my LL mods, I can't see what an NPC is saying. For mods I have voice packs or for vanilla, I can obviously hear what is spoken. Here's random images pulled from the web to illustrate: problem - no subtitles or written NPC dialogue when in conversation menu: Spoiler Upon leaving the conversation menu (ending the conversation), I can see the last line from the NPC looking like this: Spoiler Obviously normal subtitles/text in a conversation would look like this, with the NPC dialogue visible (like this image), instead of invisible like the first image: Spoiler On the first mod list I'm trying some new mods in a "victim" playthrough like Milk Mod, Toys, Shouts Like a Virgin, Sanguine's Debauchery, and a few similar mods to check them out. But I don't think they'd do that. Mod List 2 hasn't changed in 3 weeks or more and is having the same problems now. Only dialogue menu mod I have is Better Dialogue Controls, but I've used that for months (unless, again, it's something hidden within another mod). Any ideas?Mod List 1.txtMod List 2.txt
coolfreaky Posted December 30, 2021 Posted December 30, 2021 sorry but i have nothing in stock for voices than the hard way of finding a problematic mod ; as i think it is a mod that might mess with sequences or settings . for me you duplicate a profile , Load Order and the save ans start messing around removing mods start with the latest mod installed as you know than i would take the option of one of the followers mod . But before starting the mess look with tesEdit if anything is conflicting or if it can be fix with. or use my post as a bump in hope of better advice . good luck
Tlam99 Posted December 30, 2021 Posted December 30, 2021 There is a mod with a SL dialogue debug spell. If I remember right SL dialogue addon. This is the only spell I know working reliable. It stores everything incl. factions, inventory ranks. Look into the script, it's quite complicated. Resurrects npc and applies stored values. The problem you have is a stuck dialogue. Very difficult to fix. Because you need to remove factions, resurrect won't work.
Tlam99 Posted December 30, 2021 Posted December 30, 2021 Got another idea. Sometimes it's related to defeat, or knockout and surrender. If you have this installed, use the dwarven bone. (my tool to capture npc's and put them into a sack) Stay (not moving) and make a power hit (left mouse long) If the npc goes not down, repeat. Now the npc should be knocked out. Speak, (E) and select revive.
ttts1 Posted December 30, 2021 Author Posted December 30, 2021 Solved it, sort of. I have subtitles for dialogue text back in the game but I don't understand how/why this started. Thanks @coolfreaky and @Tlam99 for your ideas. I spent almost 20 hours yesterday solving some other issues (and other people's while waiting on mine, hence all the posts I made recently). I didn't want to spend many hours on this and decided to do what I've done when MNC starts causing horse problems for me. Turn off/Turn on. TL/DR version - I simply turned Subtitles off and then turned them back on in the game menu. It worked. I don't know why. More detailed explanation in case it helps others: 1. Turned off SexLab Dialogues based on @Tlam99 mention of it. 2. New game, new character. Spoke to the first NPC I saw. No Subtitles. 3. Went to the game menu to check Subtitles on a whim. Saw they were set to "off". WHY ?!?!?!?! Turned them on and saw subtitles for dialogue again. Problem solved, right? Sort of. 4. Turned SexLab Dialogues back on, it must not have been the problem. 5. Loaded save for main character. Check game menu for subtitles, they are "on". Talk to NPC....no dialogue Subtitles. WHAT? 6. Turned subtitles "off" and then back "on" in the game menu. Talk to NPC....dialogue subtitles are working. I can see NPC dialogue again !!!! I don't know why this happened, I don't know why this "fixed" it, I don't know if it will happen again. I don't think turning off SexLab Dialogues had anything to do with it, but maybe it did so I mention it in case others have this problem in the future.

I don't know why. It sounds like something overwrote an INI file. There are mods that make additions or changes to INI files, and they aren't often subtle about it. One of Fallout 4's alternate start mods does this, resulting in totally screwing up the location of your saved game files. Basically mods that change or override settings that they have no business touching because the author was lazy. So something switched them off, and when you toggled subtitles off, then on again that change got pushed back into the INI file. As long as you don't reinstall whatever caused the problem (meaning giving it a chance to overwrite again) you should be good.

I thought about this and actually checked out the INI and did edit it for Subtitles based on BethINI, since I know that has options to change subtitle settings. I specifically added the "Subtitle" options from BethINI, which really only add the NPC speaker's name and the range away from the PC that NPC dialogue is picked up by subtitles. I hoped this might trigger Subtitles to register or something. But it did nothing and so I deleted the INI changes. Maybe that played a part as well, deleting the changes "resetting" the INI? I don't know. (I'm using "SKSE64 ini pre-download for lazy users" for my default INI). I also didn't change the mods and it's working. I suspect you're probably right that something was modifying the INI settings, but I still don't know what and how it triggered it. I would guess this will happen again at some point, similar to how I have to this with MNC each time I change between MO2 profiles (even if both have MNC with the same settings, I get invisible horses almost every time). All these suggestions did help me though. The only reason I figured this out was the suggestions sparked some ideas of things to try.
Wyrdo Posted January 2, 2022 Posted January 2, 2022 Thanks for reminding me of the subtitles options, I was having the same issue. I didn't disable Sexlab Dialogues or a couple of others affecting NPC conversations. In Settings "Dialogue Subtitles" was already checked, but "General Subtitles" wasn't, so I checked that box and now it's all working correctly.
