squall1151 Posted June 2, 2013 Posted June 2, 2013 hi guys so I just bought a beastly gaming pc with an 840 Samsung 240gb ssd. I had this custom built, orderd the parts online and took it to a local pc shop for them to build it for me. when the computer was built. the person that built it for me said to me. try not to use a lot of the ssd so the data doesn't go to another modual I said, " so I should only try and use ruffly half?" he said yes. and first I thort hmm ok? but now I think about it its kinda silly is this true that I should try not to use a lot of the ssd? can some one please give me some advice. thanks. also seen the videos for metro 2033 last light this looks amazin to me just wondering do you need to play metro 2033 is it linked to the first 1 thanks!
trep1pigeon Posted June 2, 2013 Posted June 2, 2013 I have yet to play metro 2033. My experience with Metro Last Light was more disappointment for me. I was expecting a lot more game play for the money. But I give them great credit for using a crazy game engine and smooth game play. Not a whole lot of customization as far as the character goes Only can edit weapons. Only 30 or so missions. I was thinking the game would bit a little more free play and side quests. But It is more so a first person shooter that has a linear mission pattern. No true free play to explore. Like my experience with Stalker cry of pripyat which I think are similar style games but S.T.A.L.K.E.R is more open world. Get it if you want to test your system out I wasn't truly impressed by the whole story
lordofthedread Posted June 2, 2013 Posted June 2, 2013 SSD are usually under 3 years warranty nowadays, as long as you dont use a defrag (that will damage the SSD) you can use it normally, of course using it as a storage is useless and you should use it more to install your system, heavy programs (photoshop, 3DS ....) and games. So I'd say : use your SSD a lot thats why you bought it, make backups often as it is a valid tip for anyone with any kind of storage and not because you have a SSD.
Slammer64 Posted June 2, 2013 Posted June 2, 2013 Samsung SSD's offer a marvelous program called Samsung Magician to help manage your SSD, you can set overprovisioning to extend the SSD's life, set it for performance, reliability or capacity, it will help you upgrade your firmware on the fly, but and this is a BIG but, you should use a SSD as your main drive O/S and all as lordofthedread said. If you need storage, get a good, high capacity standard h/d and put it in after you install the O/S to your SSD. Oh, one last thing, register your SSD on the Samsung website, you'll get an extention to your warranty if you do.
windpl Posted June 2, 2013 Posted June 2, 2013 try not to use a lot of the ssd so the data doesn't go to another modual I said, " so I should only try and use ruffly half?" he said yes. It wont damage SSD. Yes it will contribute to shorting life span because defraging SDD is totally pointless. And yes, sdd shouldn't been used as data storage, unless you are filthily rich and have masochistic tendencies.
lordofthedread Posted June 3, 2013 Posted June 3, 2013 Shorting life span + useless = damaging the SSD since it serve nothing and shorten the lifespan only ... just sayin. Of course your SSD wont just burn because you did a defrag but thats not what I said either. Also you can use it as storage and I agree that you would appear as a filthy rich guy but I dont see where this is masochist, in some cases it may even worth it as a SSD is a lot more resistant to shocks, works at any altitude and has a very low power consumption making it the perfect portable storage.
squall1151 Posted June 3, 2013 Author Posted June 3, 2013 Thants bril thank you all so much for your comments i now feel alot more confident about using my ssd.
