questions about esl, esm, and esp

vortex doesn't allow me to "mark light" a large portion of my esp files, so they eat up my 254 mod limit.

 

i looked up online and it said to NEVER flag an esm as an esl.

 

but what about a mod, that's labeled as a .esp but under the file header it says it's flagged as an esm? can the .esp be flagged as a .esl? or does it have to stay as a .esm?

 

do i need to compact form id like xedit says to do? or can i just simply flag the .esp's as .esl?

I assume Vortex only lets you add the ESL flag to whatever plugins already fall inside the acceptable ESL record values. Most mods do not (even if they would after compacting), so that's why. You'd have to use xEdit to compact them first before adding the ESL flag.

Correct. ESMs are meant to be masters to other plugins. Flagging them as ESL messes that up and can cause serious issues.

If a ESP is flagged as a ESM, then for all intents and purposes it is a ESM and should behave like a ESM so (as per the statement above) it cannot be flagged as ESL and must keep the ESM flag.

You absolutely must compact FormIDs in xEdit before flagging a plugin as ESL or else very bad things can happen.

In addition to what Blaze mentioned.

B4 making an esp an esp-fe, bring it to end of LO.

Avoid esl flags on mods changing world space. Voiced followers is tricky to flag.

Quest  mods and mods used by others as master, no. Flagging esm as esl can force esp load in master range.

Esm as esl might work if one knows off this restriction, but mostly need to start new game on update.

(or author checks every ID). Adding new stuff might need recompact and changes ID's. 

Changing esl flagged LO might cause problem.

Forgot an important point why not flagging esm as esl.

Esm unload reference handles, but esl don't, for apparent reasons. So if all esm would be esl flagged,

you probably could not install Bruma.

this list is what xedit said i can SAFELY flag as .esl files to reduce the mods limit strain.

 

i went through the full list and removed all the .esm files, all the files marked with a technical bug warning, and all the .esp files that are flagged as .esm (by removing, i meant i took cleared those lines from the xedit text box, not actually deleted the files).

 

and then i went through the list again and marked off what was safe, what was nsfw, and put a spoiler tag on the nsfw content, since this is in an sfw forum thread.

 

are all of these files safe to compact and flag as .esl? or are there some files that shouldn't be touched?
