Chaurus Melee Attack Issue

Noticed this at the beginning of my current character start. Unsure if the previous character also had the issue. Chaurus and Chaurus Reapers do not melee attack. I'm fairly certain Chaurus Hunters do. They will spit, and appear to animate in all other circumstances fine. I had a look at the Chaurus entry in xEdit to see if there was anything ESP-wise messing with the attack data or race, but came up pretty much blank. The only modifications to Chaurus' was an additional faction entry from One With Nature and Estrus Chaurus, I believe.

The issue is similar to the DLC Boar bug that comes with cleaning Dragonborn incorrectly. The boar will attack you once or twice then simply follow the player around. So I'm assuming it's a mesh skeleton or . HKX issue. I have MNC and Baka ABC installed. ABC overwrites MNC, but the thread doesn't have any mention of Chaurus issues. Anyone got an idea?

Yes, but not a useful one.  I see this happen with werewolf followers all the time and with them it seems to be related to the behavior graph being in the wrong state.

For the followers, a console command of "pushactoraway xxxxxxxx 1" knocks them over and resets it and then they go back to normal.  I assume something similar is happening with any "attacking but not really" kind of behavior.

In the case of chaurus, they are typically ranged attackers unless they are close enough and have a straight enough path to their target, then they will sometimes charge.  Hunters are definitely more aggressive in this behavior set.

I have no idea what causes this (might be mod-related, might not) or how to fix it permanently.

This actually was helpful, in a sort of round about way. I think the issue came from the Chaurus Reaper (from Immersive Creatures) being spawned in ambush. That specific Chaurus wouldn't attack except for a charge when disable/enabling it. I don't think Reapers are meant to be spawned in ambush since it was far too large to be hidden. Something must have broken there since placeatme-ing the same RefID Chaurus Reaper was able to attack. The Beastess Chaurus companion just doesn't attack at all in my game so I had assumed when seeing the broken Reaper that all Chaurus were suffering a bug.

Thanks for replying though! Sometimes having someone just throw out another train of thought helps keep me from lasering in on the wrong track.

"Roundabout helpful-ish" is the standard I strive for. ;)

Another year later... I have the same issue, but I didn't find anything by myself poking around in xEdit or CK. Did you or somebody else fix this issue? Did you change the ai package list?

Btw I don't have Immersive Creatures installed, but the reaper is anyway spawned in ambush.

Sorry for not seeing your question ages ago glock. 😔

So, I believe just using the pushactor away command will reset it's behavior from what I remember. I think reapers are meant to spawn in ambush underground, since it appears to be set in those encounters by the Skyrim esm. The only thing I can really seem to find is that SexLab Parasites does mess with the object bounds on both types of chaurus. I assume so some of it's scripting functions. Base Skyrim, Chaurus are set to have 0,0,0 object bounds. Perhaps in the SLP thread there might be others that have reported this kind of error.

@Papersword Thanks a lot for your help! Seems that my issue was something else, I guess. I don't run SLP and none of my mods is touching the Reaper base enty in skyrim.esm. I just spawned a reaper from the console to try the pushactoraway command, but I didn't need to as it was happily spitting and meleeing at me directly from the start, just as you would expect from such a fine creature :)

My current suspicion: The buggy encounter was with a reaper that was spawned while my PC was infested from another chaurus / still added to the chaurus faction. One of the things I tried was curing the infestation from MCM, waiting around and approaching the reaper again, but with no effect. Maybe the MCM cleanup is missing something, or maybe the state of PC when the reaper is spawned matters. The working encounter was after my PC gave birth regularly, which should trigger a complete reset.

So - "roundabout helpful-ish" wins the day again :D
