easily said than done, but its possible check out my works. If your companion request as a character has more people wanting it ill make it a character.

ah okay, so there's a way but very hard, that mod has been on nexus for a long time, i dont think there's still many people interested in it, just play her as a follower, oh and thank you for let me know

Wouldn't it be awesome if you could have a dialogue option that actually turned the follower into the dragon born so that you could play as that person until you wanted to change back or change to another follower.  You could explore different builds this way and switch from a pure mage to a buff warrior at will.

To be honest, you might as well just convert her.

 

Vilja is the most endorsed companion in the whole of the Nexus so it will most likely get used a lot. The only issue is you will never be able to release it on the Nexus.
