Black lines on fire smoke, spells, etc

Driving me batty, I googled but can't find a soloution.

 

I have found other people with the same issue and here is a picture I found that is pretty much exactly the same as the issue im having.

Its distracting and I never had this issue before.  I don't get why this is happening.

 

All of my mods are now up to date as well, I updated afew and since updating I've had the issue.

I had this issue too, even before installing any mods whatsoever.  But it was infrequent and minuscule enough that I never bothered to ask about it.  It'd be nice if there were a fix, however.

Seems to be Anti Aliasing, strange, as I previously was running at 8xAA with no issue.

 

Unless I just noticed it, ah well, using FXAA now, not as good as 8xAA but least no damn lines.

Yeh - anti-aliasing. I discovered my laptop install was doing this while away over the weekend (Google search: "skyrim fire black lines", solution was quickly found). If I set AA to 4 instead of 8, it fixed the problem. FXAA plus AA 4 seems to be fine.

 

Anti-Aliasing settings buggered all the candles in the game for me a long while back, and it drove me completely bananas until I finally found out what was going on.

Hmm, well tbh I'm gettin better performance with that FXAA and I cant see much diff, so I'll keep with it.. I think I may have always had the issue and just not noticed because I never used fire magic until today.

Are you letting your graphics card drivers handle the tweaking?

It's best to disable the options on the Skyrim menu, and then open up your nvidia or ATI software to "force" its settings into games.

This will often improve performance, as well as generally doing a better job than letting Skyrim handle this stuff.

For ATI cards, might want to go into Catalyst control center and turn off various shader / texture optimization.  Had this problem for a bit and that solved it for me.
