StorageUtil : what happens with xxxListShift / xxxListPop on empty lists?

Do I need to check that a list is not empty before calling  xxxListShift / xxxListPop on StorageUtil lists or do the functions simply return none?

It is about thread safety - I need an atomic shift / pop.
