[HELP] CTD when I press TAB key

Hello,
I just reinstalled and modded Skyrim SE.

Now I started a new game and found that when I press the TAB key to open the menu I get a CTD.
What i find curious is that this only happens with the TAB key. I can open the invetar, open the map, open the favorites menu it all works.

I disabled all pluginds except Alternative Start and started a new game and also reinstalled SkyUI but that fixed nothing.

Can anyone help me with my problem?

A few questions which might help people,

1) What are you using for your mod organisation?

2) What SKSE plugins are you using?

3) When you disabled all your esm/esp plugins, did you just disable them by just off ticking them or did you disable the actual plugin packages with their associated assets.

4) When you disabled your plugins, was the interface folder, (under data), empty or just containing the default .swf files?

to 1) I use the Nexus Modmanager 0.80.14
to 2) SKSE version 1.5.97
to 3) I have deactivated the plugins only by simply unchecking them
to 4) the interface order was not empty

What you could try is "Temporarily" rename your interface folder to something like "interfaceBAK". (That would mean when you run the game it should be using the default interface files from the .bsa). Disable all the mods you had disabled. Then try to run and TAB. If that works you know it's one of your mods you have installed which is changing an interface, (i.e. .swf), file which is the problem. In Mod Organsor it would be easy to see which asset is being overwritten, but off the top of my head I can't remember how the Nexus Mod Manager shows conflicts.

So I started the game now with renamed interfece folder once with all plagins disabled and once with all plugins enabled and the problem still exists.

Ok, (umph), 'Temporarily' rename the 'SKSE/plugins' folder to 'SKSE/pluginsBAK'. This will probably result in much pop ups and much grumplies, but might drill down to the area you need to look in for what's causing the problem. (Might be a good idea still have the interface folder renamed and the plugins disabled as well). Should be interesting.

I really appreciate your help, but renaming the SKSE/plugin folder and the Inface folder and disabling the plugins didn't change anything either.

Sorry, at a loss. Usually such things are either an interface, (.swf), problem which could be identified by just rolling back to base installation files or an SKSE plugin problem because of an incompatibility with another SKSE plugin. I can't see it being a mesh problem because it shouldn't be at that stage, (i.e when pressing TAB it executes the flash execution code for interface and the dialog it brings up doesn't have any mesh related gumph showing, (eg armours, etc)). Sorry to have wasted your time.

Edit that said, you could try just renaming your 'meshes' folder, (with above changes), to see if it is a mesh thing. (worth a try).

It doesn't seem to have anything to do with the meshes either.

Another thing you could try is, (for test purposes), create a 'default' setup.

Don't have Nexus Mod Manager running and back up your plugins.txt , (usually at "C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Skyrim Special Edition\plugins.txt", and your Skyrim.ini and SkyrimPrefs.ini - usually at C:\Users\<user name>\Documents\My Games\Skyrim Special Edition)

1) Rename your Data directory to something like DataBAK. (important so you can get it back).

2) Create new Data Folder.

3) With reference to images 2 to 4 from https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/98098/ , (Yes that is the LE list, but they should be the same for SE) , Copy, (not Move), the individual files from the 'DataBAK' folder. (There arn't that many really - keep telling yourself), and create and fill the appropriate sub folders and fill with their default contents as shown in the images.

4) change the plugins.txt to contain:- (Make doubly sure you made a backup of the original before doing this).

*Skyrim.esm
*Update.esm
*Dawnguard.esm
*HearthFires.esm
*Dragonborn.esm

5) Run SkyrimSE.exe, and see if you can do Tab. This should then rule out default data file corruption, (obviously doesn't rule out executable or config files being fubar, (i.e. Skyrim.ini and Skyrimprefs.ini).

6) After you are satisfied either way that you have some sort of result , (good or bad), rename the Data directory you have to DataFresh - (or delete if you don't want it), and rename the DataBAK back to Data so you are back to your current install. (also restore the original plugins.txt and other .ini files).

Obviously at the stage you have the default Data structure setup, you could also do a Steam verify integrity of file check - just back up you Skyrim.ini and Skyrimprefs.ini before hand. Thus you know you have a validated set of default files.

What this would tell you.

1) If the default doesn't work you know it's something odd with either the executable directory contents or the .ini files

2) If the default does work and with the knowledge that you disabled previously the interface files, SKSE plugins, meshes, and all but a couple of ESM/ESP you know that what ever is causing the problem is probably a base script file, (.pex), which has been overwritten with something new and 'exciting'. In this case its a matter of determining which of your mods has done this nefarious action.
