Currently in the works of making my own skin texture for better khajiit. I got as far as making the shell in blender but it's black is this normal behaviour or did I do something wrong?

I got passed it. You need to convert it from a mesh to a "curve" depending on the amount you added it will hang for awhile then you need to select the "Curves" option and then you can put an actual texture on it.
