Asariphile Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 I'm looking to play a "non-adventurer" character.Basically, combat of any kind is a last resort, and even then you do it very poorly. Are there any good mods out there for playing this character type? Eseentialy a commoner with no combat ability?(I plan on using the yielding mod for lovers as well as the animal version quite extensively hehe)
trex Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 Hey I like to try this out sometimes, it can be tough though without the proper adjustments to joburg/slave encounters/ rapers (in the sense of getting killed & reloading instead of the fun stuff). There's the stripper mod, goranga's trader & economy mod (get the economy mod, not the restaurant mod as the latter only give you one inn for RP waitress job, the former has in integrated in all inns). Goranga's trader mod gives you a horse and allows you to sell items to people around towns, not too bad, and with travel involved, even without that free horse. Gardening mod is good if you want to RP as a farmer of some sort. Golden Horse Courier is a great mod, integrating Better Cities (I'm sure there's a non BC version too) which starts you out as a small courier (10g a job) and then builds you up to 100g inter-city jobs. Travel is required, but I've had plenty of joburg situations doing just the local jobs. I love this concept, it's a bit hard to stick to, I had most success with the courier job (I didn't have the joburg settings right for stripping so it always devolved into no-pay orgies lol). If you know or anyone else has suggestions, I'd love to also explore this gamestyle more.
_Me Posted April 13, 2013 Posted April 13, 2013 Trade and Commerce all the way. It makes the economics of the game harder and more realistic. It makes specializing in mercantile actually worth it. Persuasion Overhaul, likewise, makes persuasion and personality useful to have. If you have low personality, it's probably better to avoid the persuasion minigame, where in vanilla it's easy. You can use companion mods to get bodyguards. Companion Share and Recruit allows you to actually buy bodyguards that you pay a weekly salary to guard you. Basic Primary Needs or other food mods gives you more to do, as you need to keep your health up. It also makes economic success harder, as you need to constantly buy more food and a place to sleep. You find food easily on an adventure. Most animals are edible and you can always raid a farm. Not in town. Also, at maximum difficulty, finding clean water can take a while. You might even spend long periods of time drunk off your ass because the only safe thing to drink is alcohol. Be a Beggar allows you to beg when low on cash. They don't give you much, just enough to not starve. Not adventuring means cash is much harder to come by, so this is good to have when starting out. I would also suggest Daily Income Revised, so you can beg from the same people more than once. Persuasion Overhaul makes it so you have to be actually persuasive to beg. Crowded roads and From2ch lives make roadways actually safe to travel as they add friendly npcs who use them and kill off wolves and bandits. Mods like Role-Playing Character will allow you to make your PC even more non-violent through a customized backstory. Start by Ship is also good (and completely compatible) and it allows you to have varied starting equipment (nobles get gold, warriors get armor, merchants get trade items, farmers get food, ect.) and not have to fight your way out of a dungeon. Using both can give you a character with nearly no combat experience and loads of speechcraft skills. Or you can make your character completely broke and weak, for maximum challenge. SM Combat Hide makes running away from fights easier. Unsafe Streets adds muggers in town. This will give your non-violent characters more challenge, but can still be solved non violently. For instance, you can just pay them, or you can run for a guard, or you can smex them if you have the appropriate lovers mods. There are various Surrender or Die mods out there, but I don't use them, so you'll need to judge for yourself. I keep getting accused of murder when I use them. SoT Holidays adds holidays to towns, making merchant players have more interesting dynamics.
trex Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 I've been wanting to add in CSR, but I don't know if it is fine to use MCS & if it has other possible incompatibilities. Definitely grab the start by ship (or any alternate start mod) as you skip that beginning dungeon and get down to the game proper asap. I don't know if FCOM & the economy mod it suggested (IIRC, it was Economy Enhanced?) to use are compatible with Trade & Commerce. With mods, such as NPC adders or guild/bank mods, beware of Open Cities (and its variants) compatibility. Hunting and basic farming with the Gardening mod with a food/drink mod can add a fairly entertaining and RP-able gamestyle. Archery can be used (or not, kill a rat with a dagger "Get your Fresh Tasty Rat Meat!") and surplus foods can be sold for other living/luxuries. It avoids the semi-cheat of goranga's trade mod in that you actually have to work (and actually play much more of the game) and can get into difficult situations. From2chanlives is good for safer roads. So if you want difficult dangerous travel, don't use it. It does add some life to taverns on the travel paths and I did see adventures in forts & sleeping in camps, but they also don't seem to die (the NPCs I saw always came back) so that's another thing you may not like so much. Persuasion mods are good if you can be patient. Unsafe streets I didn't find too helpful, they always came in to rape my player in their houses...and they are in cities. Just say no, and wait for nearby NPCs/Guards to finish them off. Good concept though. I did try Trade & Commerce but I never actually ran the store. Just my playstyle, I avoid fast travel, and low encumbrances/schlepping to Chorral to stock the store never happened. If you use other economy mods, check compatibility. As FCOM suggested, I use Enhanced Economy, check it out if you want.
