Animations start slowly, or not all (don't display on screen but active in console log)

Recommended Posts

Hi! I finally managed (thanks SSE's ESLs and ESP-FEs, MergePlugins and zMerge) to pull mostly pretty much all I wanted on my SE load order : variety in armors and weapons, adventures in Skyrim and other lands, a few SL mods (though I had to let go of a few stuff such as Wartimes' Daughter, Defeat, The Last Refuge (and addons), SL Survival among others, to save for each multiples esp slots or because of issues with those). Cleaned most of the usual blackfaces by editing the files in SSEdit. The last MergePlugins merged plugins have been disabled and are being replaced by zMerge merge plugins (on the hypothesis that some were potentially erroneous though possible to merge without errors in MergePlugins).

At the end of the line, the result is pretty neat in-game. Except the "bad endings".

I hope the answer wasn't given recently (I found threads here and on Reddit that shared similarity in the problem but I didn't wanted to necro them, + the attempted fixes there didn't worked).

I currently experience long delays before the animations start (more than usual).

Some animations correctly load eventually, while others don't.

The PC stands -often in mid-air- and moves on stand (idles). The angle of the camera is frozen where he look at some point (I'm using Look What You See).

The NPC moves on stand.

I have full control over camera.

From the console (screenshots):

- The succession of "ActorAlias[Name] - Distance From WaitRef[ID] : [distance]" could be the source of the delay?

- The animations do start and end, with orgasm at some point, according to the log.

I was just testing it (and testing Cursed Loot's rape feature as well, as DCL is one of the few SL mods on this load order), and I'm almost sure the same animation was announced and played out right twice before failing a third time.

Given I also have recurrent problems with Death Alternative (going in bleedout by fighting or falling from height often, quite possibly always stuck the PC indefinitely into bleedout kneeling), it kills the thrill of the bad endings (virtually all end up in reloading a pre-defeat, which defeats the purpose)(which is a shame given Sanguine's Debauchery seemed to run exceptionally well on this load order).

I'm leaving aside Sexlab Defeat for now for the same reasons, though DA might have been the cause of my problems since the beginning.

Any advice on settings to have a fluid game with any or both of those mods? or if SL Defeat on its own would be a good alternative.

I'll be happy to be hear any suggestion (such as engines fixes or loading "boosters", though I believe I have all compatible and up-to date fixes).

I believe I have all the requirements and compatibility patches for my mods. I fear the answer to my problem is "you've got too many mods", though I hope someone has experienced similar problems and found the fix.

Down here information that might be relevant.

I use Vortex, up to date. I don't intend to use another mod organizer.

here my load order (merge plugins detailed).

I use SKSE64 up to date (1.5.97). I received no warning from any source regarding SKSE.

I'm using the latest update of the XPM32 skeleton (4.80). Problems with animations seemingly didn't started with the installation.

I was using FNIS 7.6 but switched to FNIS XXL 7.6 before the problem occured. I had installed creatures animations BEFORE adding FNIS Creatures 7.6 (I had 0thought of a SL-lite

game but forgot to install FNIS Creatures when installing packs of animations).

When I run it, I get the following:

Have you looked at your save game in SaveTool/FallrimTools?

If you see a lot of active scripts/suspended stacks in the dozens then you're suffering from script lag. Script lag causes animations, especially multiple actor animations, to not work properly because the system is starving for resources.

You can help the game process SLab scripts by running fewer script heavy mods. A temporary way to alleviate this animation problem is to open the character menu and to wait until the actors line up for the animations. It is not a solution though.

Also, close to 256 esp plugins is pushing it. You have DD, campfire, and wet and cold, which are script heavy mods.

In my game, from time to time I've run into some very heavy script lag from either a or more than one mod, a crapped out animation that ended broken (you were attacked for instance, and it didn't recover correctly), multiple animations running,  and or environmental script loading  (ie, large roaming groups of animals humans, etc in certain areas of the wild, plus weather and so forth)

For instance, if an animation was loading slowly, if I opened console, I'd almost surely see some line pass by (with SL debugging on) saying

Timerlag = <SomeVeryLargeVariableValue>

(or something like that. haven't looked-for or seen it in a while, so my term for the lag may be slightly off)

corresponding to the delay in script progression I see in game.

What I found was that when I encounter such delays, it's best for me to (rapidly) find an indoor refuge where I create a new save

clean said save, reload said cleaned save then sit it out for a while, perhaps a game day or two, then make a new save, clean it, and move on.

This usually seems to clear whatever was bugging out. And not doing so often resulted in "unexpected" CTDs or generally sluggish game response.

Do you have Elephant's Script Latency tester installed?

https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/24124

This is, in my experience, a good tool to check to see if conditions are going south. it will flag a problem long before your player starts lagging noticeably or before you launch an animation that slows to a grind or fails to load. I usually fire it up (in notification mode only) if I see any glitching in my character movements or I'm in an area like the region between Whiterun and Rorikstead (where I see most of my heavy environmental loading and somewhat routine and imo related CTDs)

PS> I didn't initially want to quote any hard numbers, as one person's game has its own "native" lag values due to hardware and mod loading, but for the sake of ... idk... something... I will say that personally, for my game, I get concerned if Elephant reports anything > ~85-90 ms in a sustained manner during play (not just after a menu has been closed or the game is otherwise purposefully interrupted. That will appear as a large lag but is transitory.

Thank you both for your answers!

Concerning FallrimTools: I've tested many saves, some had around a dozen active scripts, none had suspended stacks.

Concerning the TimerLag, I havevarious results depending on the item:

- For SyncDone(prepare), it is always negative values, from ~-115 to ~-3

- For SyncDone(starUp), SyncDone(Sync), (and others?) during the animation, it is almost always around 9,5

- For SyncDone(Reset) goes from 20 to 29

I'll have to test those values with NPC teleportation enabled (see bellow).

That's why I switched from Frostfall and RnD to Frostbite and iNeed for my SE load order, as they were allegedly less heavy-script. Is there any good alternative for survival mods? (featuring cold/frost, wet/humidity, Hunterborn/Camping-like features)

I'm having difficulty to reduce my load order, most likely candidates would be dungeons/quests (forgotten city, gray cowl, etc., I just dumped Sinister Seven).

Thanks as well for Elephant's Script Latency Tester, I didn't knew about this one. I will surely use it if testing demonstrate further need for troubleshooting.

Seemingly, the problem originated from the "NPC teleportation" (the feature that enable NPC close to the PC to walk towards them before the animation) enabled in Sexlab (though I forgot to check the TimerLag, if there was any). Character next to each other had up to tens of lines trying to place themselves, I will post it to the Sexlab Framework page.

I'll have to test again to confirm that there isn't any more animations that don't start at all).

Given this, I'm replacing SL Privacy Immersive by Normal version (unsure it uses the same mechanics, but (I haven't seen NPC-NPC situation so far) but that'll solve similar situations in the future.

FWIW, when cleaning saves, I purge both unattached instances AND undefined elements. Moreover, I routinely check and clean my saves thee days, as early on I didn't and I had regular, repetitive, predictable problems that I need not have suffered.

Glad you seem to have found the culprit

I'd recommend installing and trying Elephant's Script Tester so you become familiar. It's low impact/overhead and really does come in handy, if nothing else, for a sanity check  and confirmative that all is well once and a while.  If you have other tools that will do its job, great, but if not, you're shortchanging yourself by not installing it (And using it)

Forgotten City is not a problem at all. Its scripts only run during the quest. It's a well done mod. No experience with gray cowl of nocturnal.

IIRC Warzones is a also a script heavy mod.

City and location mods are generally not script-heavy. Scripted custom companion and survival mods that poll PC and NPC stats and states constantly consume the most resources. If you want to keep a mod, see if you can increase the polling rate to 60+ seconds.

I will in the next days, I've been recently using a lot of stuff I had neglected for some time for whatever reason (afraid, uninterested, simply didn't worked for stupid reason, etc.) (using SSEEdit5 to modify some stuff and resolve black faces, Wrye Bashing, zMerge), and that done me only (or at least mostly).

Just to go a bit back in time, if you'll allow it, I was interested by the timelager values. They seems to be relatively the same as before the changes I made to my load order (and some C++, fixes updates/removal) and MCM mods. Does they seemed right? (I don't know their exact meaning, how to read them in terms of scale, what to think of negative values...)

I was more thinking in terms of "whatever stuff I can dump to reduce stuff to be loaded, scripted, heavy, and not necessarily something I need" (in the same way when anything goes wrong on my computer and I can't find quickly the cause, I start taking out.

I "finally" have stuttering while in the city of Bruma but that's it (maybe testing again in Whiterun Hold. I am tailoring the NPC-scannings mods' MCM to find something efficient.

Warzones (and/or Open Civil War) have proved to interact well with the non-followers NPC-NPC rapes (I missed it so far in SE) in terms of NPC interactions (Imperials and/or Stormcloak platoons often spawning at the gate of Whiterun, the Imperials always winning thanks to the Whiterun Guard support sometimes ending up catching Carlotta behind Arcadia's Cauldron), resources consumption-issued problems were pretty random)(it was in LE, and IIRC, apropos was a good way to know those stuff were going on).

That is basically true of all scripts - they run when they are supposed to run. All this nonsense about 'script heavy' is just that - nonsense. Nobody ever defines what constitutes 'heavy' and nobody ever gives a source for the notion.

What scripts would be running in the middle of the plains? Or, put another way, why would environmental loading have a bearing on script load? Heavy environmental loading = heavy memory usage which can result in CTDs on an incorrectly configured game.

To be perfectly  honest, I'm no "expert" and have no expert insight/idea what's "really" going on. My "procedure" is simply based on experience as a player to avoid crashing when I recognize an emergent problem. All I know is what I "see". I do know that lag increases (for my game) substantially in the area (not always but regularly), and it sometimes spikes to hundreds of millesconds, whereupon my character's movement begins to stutter and then the game generally CTDs. It's always the area between Whiterun and Rorikstead.

Could be things spawning in such as the various creatures or bandits etc putting strain on your game. Could be a bad mesh, e.g. a plant or grass which only 'grows' in that particular area. Could be a grass mod or similar using big textures.

In my interpretation "script heavy" refers to mods that have scripts polling/scanning the PC and/or nearby NPCs often enough to result in suspended stacks or broken quests in areas like Riverwood. When I notice the game is losing its marbles, I just remove the mod and start another save.

For instance, some custom follower mods run non-adjustable poll scripts so often that I saw over 1000 active scripts and suspended stacks in my save. Ruined that playthrough.

What you are describing are the symptoms - the cause is badly written or broken mods.

My current save on a test game (LE) I have been abusing for several months has 4 active scripts after 155 hours with 450 mods including 100+ followers. Active scripts seldom get into double figures in any of my games.

In the end, it seems like it was some animations packs (or a too big numbers of animations) who were somehow messing with the whole animation process. I've removed other mods to have a way smoother game (through not perfect and CTD-free yet).

Regarding the discussion on "script-heavy"/badly written mods, I wanted to know if either had managed to find the right mods combinations to have a smooth and immersive (no major breaks, virtually no CTD, little to no use of console, little to no stutter), using :

- survival and immersion mods (frost, wet, hunger, thirst (with wells), sleep, hunting/foraging). I'm using Frostfall (I've been, told to use Frostbite but disliked it. allegedly it runs smoothly with the right MCM settings), RnD (I've been told to use iNeed but disliked it), Campfire (strong "script-heavy" reputation), Hunterborn (+sleep tight and gotobed)

- weather mods (Obsidian, Wet and Cold, True Storms, I'm looking into switching from Obsidian to Cathedral)

- combat and archery mods (Ultimate Combat, TK's mods (bad rep), ABT, AGO, True Armor (haven't tested it yet))(AI, dodge, arrows bleedouts and recovery

- death and kink mods (something dynamic, not much of heavy bondage/slavery, NPC relationships, aimed at survival, horror and immersion, less towards bestiality and more towards humans and humanoids rape and relationships) (SL/SLA/DD/DA/Defeat/DCL/SS + From the Deeps + a few NPC mods such as SLEN, Further Lover's Confort, SL Sexlife, utilities, and SD+, SCB and SL Survival at most)

- wildlife mods (Animallica, SIC at a minimal level (without the goblins, the night spawns, the additional spawns, etc.), Beast of Tamriel)

- NPC/Civil War overhauls (Warzones and Open Civil War, but also Diverse Skyrim (no impact?), Immersive Patrols, Man Those Borders, possibly Hold Riders

This may sound greedy, but those are the major categories I can't play without no matter the kind of playthrough I want (well, except the kink part. I can still just play the game), and which I have seen here and there being (erroneously or not?) so-called "script-heavy", causing CTDs, stutters and lags.

I'd glad and interested if you had any alternatives (or not, maybe some combinations are correct) or settings to advice me.

Leaving the console open for troubleshooting is ok.

However, to do so everytime when animations are starting is not a good idea.

Already started scrips run, but new ones will be stacked, even those triggered by running scripts.

Timing becomes messed up.

Closing the console then triggers a mess, all stacked start the same time.

Stack dump may be a result.

Try it and check your saves.

Sorry to necro this older thread, but did you have any particular packs that you removed that improved things?
