Custom outfit mod gets stiff hands with HDT

Hello there, I need a little bit of help identifying a problem with a custom outfit mod I got.  Basically it's a character outfit converted to SSE that I give to a companion so it looks like another character (without doing the hassle of modding the face ingame etc.), it all works wonders up until I installed HDT physics. After I load the game or change area with loading screen, its hands become "stiff", like frozen in place and don't move anymore. Please note that the hands are also part of the armor per se (the converted character outfit completely hides the wearer, body parts included).

I reached out to the person who did this conversion for me but he claims never to have used HDT physics or any kind of physics mod for SSE and I am out of ideas right now because I think it may be some sort of "collateral" damage I can maybe fix with SSEdit or the CK but don't really know what to click.

Is there anyone who could help me out fixing this issue? The "outfit" hands work properly if I unequip and requip the outfit manually but as soon as I have some kind of loading screen they get stiff. This must be a HDT collateral bug because if I disable HDT I don't have the issue at all.

Point is, I would like to keep HDT and also my armor mod.

Thanks in advance for any feedback!

Here attached some screens showing the bug I meant.

Do you have XPMSE installed? Does your armor mod use a custom skeleton? What is the baseshape name in the outfit mod mesh and is it defined in your SMP config?

No, the mod itself is very basic and it's for male characters only so I don't think it uses custom skeleton settings like that (but I may be wrong, my armor modding knowledge is very limited).  It's not meant to have physics of any kind, just a basic skin so to say.
