Thoughts about Tulpas

Anyone familiar with the tulpa phenomenon? I've only stumbled upon it recently, so I have a base level understanding. It seems to mean different things to different people, from a spiritual enlightenment, to a mental exercise, to imaginary friends, and even broaching on fursona and waifu territory. The essence seems to be hosting multiple coexisting personalities or consciousnesses. Anyone have any further enlightenment or is this a bit too fringe?

I thought Tulpas were supposed to be physical manifestations of your thoughts; like really dense thought-forms.
