"Invincible"/non-aggressive enemies, LE -resolved

I am having an intermittent issue where enemies will refuse to agro or register as enemies, and if I attack them, the game will register them as an enemy for like half a second, then they will heal back to full and cease registering as an enemy again.

Unfortunately, I can't really trace exactly when it started, because it's not a consistent issue, so I can't pin down the mods that were added when it started to be able to try to systematically disable them. My hope is someone has had this issue before and can give me an idea of what mod or mod interaction is causing it, before I have to just start casually turning off mods until I find which one is the culprit.

I have tried cycling combat AI from the console, as well as reloading the game. It appears to be consistent on precisely which individual enemies are doing it. I have not attempted the console kill command, but even if it works.. that's not a solution. >.>

I'd be looking for mods that toggle aggressiveness for enemies or faction status for the player.  Sexlab Defeat does this, though it usually has a short duration.  You could also check whatever cloaking effects your character has active in the console (though that could be hundreds, so that may not be an efficient way to check).  If it is an outgoing spell effect, you could also check in the console what effects are on the NPC that is misbehaving, as that may give a clue.

EDIT: Your load order looks a bit weird with SkyUI so far back.

Pretty sure it's not Defeat, as I've had that one for quite a while with no issues. I think the only other ones that mess with it to any extent are MCG and DA. DA I've had about as long as Defeat, so I'm fairly sure it's safe.. MCG though could definitely be the culprit, as that was a fairly recent install as of when I noticed the issue. I'm not super familiar with console commands, how do I use it to check effects on myself/critters?

As for where SkyUI is, that's where Vortex decided it made most sense? I dunno. I'm kinda new to this whole modding thing. I can follow instructions, but that doesn't mean I understand what I'm doing when I do >.>

Means nothing if a newly introduced mod is doing something that triggers it.

As far as console use, there are tutorials out there on that.

If you are new to modding, the most useful advice I can give is:

  1.   Assume nothing - the mods you've decided are fine very well may not be -- not their fault if something else is doing new things that they are responding to.
  2.   Read up on everything -- even with mods you've used for a long time, something that changes in a version update can light the fuse on something else in your load order.
  3.   Google all the things (though I've found Bing to be better for many things recently.  YMMV)
  4.   Specific to Skyrim LE: look warily upon any and all mods made prior to 2015.  They are guilty until proven innocent.  This also applies to topics/threads/forums -- always seek the latest information as things change and a hell of a lot of "commonly understood" ideas and tips are not just bad but outright dangerous.
  5.   For INI changes, use BethINI and do nothing else.  Most INI tweaks/info are garbage that has been passed on as though it were truth.
  6.   Your initial goal as a mod-user is not to load up and enjoy the game; it is to discover what mods work well together and create a stable foundation to build upon.  Doing it any other way leads to more bug-hunting/issues/frustration than actual playing.

Bethesda modding is a gaggle of flaming dumpsters caught up in an EF5 tornado.  You either run away and never look back or dive into it and take your beating.

IMO every effort someone takes to try and make it easier generally produces the opposite effect by allowing a new mod user to sidestep an issue that they will fall into later with no idea whence it came.

Fixed it.
Broke something else.
Reverted to before the fix, redid what I thought fixed it without the part that broke other things.
Still broken.

Currently it looks like there is some issue in the interactions between three mods:
Defeat
Death Alternative
Magna Cum Gaudio

Possibly something else in the mix also triggered the break, but I'm not sure what it could be, yet.

Work to do in the real world though, so I'll get back to fighting with this shit another time. Really hoping I don't just have a completely borked game, because I'm enjoying this playthrough and don't particularly want to start over. >.>

Precisely which thing fixed it, or what combination of them, I'm not sure, but if anyone else has this issue (or if it crops up for me again, I have it recorded >.>), this is the steps I took to resolve it:
Used the console command 'dispelallspells' to clear my character of random spells
Reset quests and character status in Death Alternative
Cleaned Defeat from the MCM, and then went ahead and uninstalled it (I didn't test prior to uninstalling). There wasn't a lot of reason to use both MCG and Defeat anyways.

I had previously tried just removing Defeat, which didn't resolve the issue.
Neither did just removing MCG.

Death alternative is a well-known dumpster fire. Unless you have something depending on it youabsolutely, absolutely want to keep 150+%, i'd suggest you use another "after death" mod.

Any recommendations for less dumpster fire options? (Yes, I could search. Stumbling through the mess of mods available is what gave me the dumpster fire in the first place. >.>)

Not really, sorry about that... i have stopped looking for and using those mods for gameplay reasons. makes me approach things a bit more carefully.

I know of one which gives you a second breath (but fall again and you're toast), another one wow-style where you need to run back to your body as a ghost... there are different takes on the concept so it's about finding the one you prefer. but in general, i found that anything involving player death and essential status (preventing death) are wonky in some form or another. DA just happens to be one of the worst in existence.

Personally I've just grown kinda tired of games that make me feel like I need to hit quicksave every 5 minutes because I might die, I don't really see a difference between "aw shit, you died, reload." and "aw shit, you died, here's a penalty for it, keep going." (and I very much do not enjoy the hardcore "aw shit, you died. Start a new game, bitch." experience in video games)

I like the idea of Death Alternative in that it can have me captured by enemies and need to fight my way free of them, which is a more interesting and immersive experience than reloading from my last save, IMO (even without adding in the whole rape thing. >.>)

I'll probably stick with it for my current character, since it's one of those mods that can mess things up on removal for a save, but may try to hunt down a better alternative to it when I do my next.
