CTD in perks/Level up screen. Is it a number of open file handles problem?

Recommended Posts

So recently my load order has grown and I've been getting the old chestnut CTD when going to the perks/level up screen. So I thought to myself enough of this lets give 'Level Up Menu Ex' a try, (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/28822/ ). This for this most part works however it still crashes. Not immediately though. So I thought umm, The only real difference between the two screen types is that the default, (I think), loads up all the perks icons at the start, where as 'Level Up Menu Ex' loads each one as you highlight it. So in 'Level Up Menu Ex' , starting at the top, I hand cursor'ed down each option. Got to Critical Banker, (75th perk in the list), and CTD. So reloaded game and moused to the bottom of the perk list and started going up the list one at a time. This CTD'd on the 74th item going up, (but as Strength would of been loaded on showing the panel, that makes 75).

As Skyrim SSE had a similar fault which caused the False Save Corruption effect and was fixed by raising the number of file handles to 2048, (https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/17230/ ), and also Fallout NV had a similar problem which meant you could only run with about 139 mods until the file handle limit was raised to 2048, (https://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/68714 ) . My conjecture is that Fallout 4 could do with the same treatment.

My loadout is 238 ESM/ESP with 214 BSA and 17 esl's/esp'd esl's). I can't see a relationship between those numbers and 512 but the premise of it being a 'number of file handles being exceeded' problem seems sound from observation.

Any thoughts, (or budding low level coding types wanting fame and glory by doing the necessary hack)?
