I like the 'make an avatar, explore and meet people and (possibly) fuck' idea, but there's a BIG difference between free "free" and buy this the one time and you're all good. I'd like something new and different, but along the same lines as Secondlife, if that makes sense?

Today i stumbled over an offer for a male and a female avatar for 1 L$. But to your real question, i dont think there is a real good alternative. There is this OSGrid, but i think there you also need some coins there.
