3dsMax question - freezing then importing makes him a popsicle!

I am creating a control rig for fallout 3/NV that will allow me to enable/disable IK so I can easily create new animation and edit existing ones too. I'd like finger controls as well, but most of the tutorials on YouTube have you Freeze Transforms so you can wire fingers with the Wire Parameter. Unfortunately, importing a vanilla animation after freezing just turns him in to a popsicle. Why does this happen in this application? Hitting the Reset XForm button does nothing. Can I make finger controls without freezing the transforms?Anyone know who I can PM and ask?

To import animations, the skeleton must be the same as in the animation, so you can't freeze or add controllers.

Any changes to the skeleton have to be made after the animation is imported.
