showracemenu problem: Brow Type gone missing?

I must have gotten some bad/outdated advice on how to change your appearance using showracemenu and making it stick. I've tried to do it a few times (just changing the appearance, not actually changing the race), and the changes I make don't carry over to new saves. The instruction I found were as follows:

 

1. Run showracemenu.

2. In the console type player.setrace (something besides your current race).

3. Then type player.setrace (your race).

4. Then change your settings and accept.

 

However...this seems to have made the Brow Type option disappear for my race; I'm playing a custom race currently. Reloading the game or another save doesn't seem to fix it. I turned off my mods and tried it on another character, and Brow Type shows up for them. I loaded my mods up again and loaded a save where I had never used mods, brought up showracemenu, and they still have the Brow Type option. I bring up my modded save, launch showracemenu, look at a different race, and Brow Type shows up there. It just won't show for my custom race. If I create a new character as my custom race, Brow Type shows up when the game launches the race menu for you, but not after. Not even sure where to begin looking in the CK...not even sure how it could have made a permanent change from within the game either.

I always thought that changing your race mid-game to anything other than your vampire counterpart can result in bugs. All I do to change my appearance mid-game is use the showracemenu command and create a character like normal. No need to change the race to a different one and back again.

I tried restoring the original CustomBody.esp file (the mod where I created my custom race) and it's still happening. I think I might just back up all my mods and reinstall the game at some point, then recreating everything step by step.

 

This is just bugging the crap out of me. Is there even somewhere in the creation kit where you can change what appearance features are available to what race?

Well I found a post on another forum that said in order to actually keep the changes to your appearance you make from running showracemenu, you would have to run "player.setrace (different race)", then "player.setrace (your actual race)", then change your appearance and accept, and this would preserve the appearance changes when you save. I had tried doing this without using "player.setrace" in the race menu, and the appearance changes were always gone whenever I loaded another save. Specifically I was trying to use a custom skin tone I added.

 

So when I used the "player.setrace" command and went about adjusting my appearance, that's when I saw that Brow Type was gone from the Brow section.

 

My custom race is just a copy of the Nord race, with its own SkinNaked armor, which lets me have a unique body from the other races. I set my armor race to NordRaceVampire, and did some other alterations which gives the Nord Vampire race the same body as my custom Nord race. That way I don't have to manually add my custom race to all the ArmorAddon files, I can wear anything a Nord vampire can wear and it shows up normally (and the only other race that has the unique body is the Nord vampire).

 

Here's the other post I was talking about. I should have seen that it was from 2011 and thought, "Gee, there may have been a few patches since then, maybe things have changed and this might not work." But instead I was like "herp derp this should work" >_<

So without changing your race, you tried using showracemenu to change your appearance. Upon completion, you saved your game. Upon loading that save, your appearance reverts to the one before using showracemenu?

 

It's strange that your new appearance does not save. I recommend starting over from scratch and following this tutorial in order to create your custom race. The RaceCompatibility.esm and scripts included with that tutorial are outdated, however. You'll need to install those from this mod instead.

Thanks, trying that mod out now, seem to work fine. Still no clue what the crap was going on, though.
