Nikiea Posted January 12, 2013 Posted January 12, 2013 Just curious if anyone around here plays JRPGs.
Kamen Rider Kuuga Posted January 12, 2013 Posted January 12, 2013 My stack of 30 JRPGs for the PS2 which has sat unplayed because I have even more games to play says no.
Guest Lady Luck Posted January 12, 2013 Posted January 12, 2013 i played jrpg many years before discovering western rpg i use to cover reviews on many various jrpg before and boy that didn't go good at all , trolls after trolls lol. anyway i especially love shin megami tensei or aka " persona " series that one remain classic its the only game that i play on my psp everytime, hmm what else chrono cross, legend of dragoon , i can't list you all good jrpg because you know why half of the game last counted was beyond that i think owned at least standard for a collector around 230 games counted along with famicom ps1 ps2 psp and pc ... if i counted sub genre jrpg that has action oriented in it like monster hunter 3 , valkyrie profile which another awosome AJRPG "Action japanese Roleplaying game" i know it's absurdly long genre but there's tons of them if i named any classic defined jrpg like based on novel corpse party is a good one. many games like dissidia and others before that i mainly picked action japanese roleplaying.

Kamen Rider Kuuga Posted January 12, 2013 Posted January 12, 2013 Well, the first JRPG that I can remember playing was Final Fantasy IV, or rather, the super easy type dubbed Final Fantasy II for the SNES. I didn't get to play it long, but it was the first time I'd actually played anything like it. Final Fantasy VI (III) was my first big introduction to the genre, since I actually owned it and played it all the way through multiple times. I still own the cart... pretty sure the battery is dead in it. But still, good times and memories with that bit of plastic. EarthBound holds a special place for me, being the first JRPG I played to have a modern flavor to it, something that I still feel is lacking to this day. I rented it and fell in love, then I bought it. I still remember getting that huge, massive, over sized box in my hands and pulling it open for the first time... the rush of having it for my own. I'm one of those weird people, though, that doesn't hold up games like Chrono trigger or Secret of Mana as legendary games. They're both good, but not best game ever material. Especially Chrono Trigger; it anything, I think Chrono Cross, the sequel, is a better game. I even enjoy Radical Dreamers over CT, but that's a whole other genre of game. And I'll take Seiken Densetsu 3 over the previous game (Secret of Mana) any day of the week. Breath of Fire... you know, I honestly can't tell you when I got into that. Maybe I rented it, but it was another game I got hooked on. Breath of Fire 2 hooked me even harder, and to this day I hold it up as the best of the series. I even went so far as to import a complete Japanese copy just to have everything that came with it. I could go on, but I'll just end this with a little fact; the most recent JRPG that I poured any real amount of time into was Persona 3 FES, and I clocked in more than 100 hours into it before I beat it. And I enjoyed every moment of it, even if it did get a bit... real life heavy with all the school nonsense. But actually, now that I think about it, the Persona 1 remake for the PSP also has over 100 hours logged into it. Honestly, when it comes down to sheer time amount played, I almost want to say I've played more MegaTen than anything else RPG related, spanning the Persona series, Devil Survivor series, Strange Journey, the Last Bible series for the Game Boy, Devil Children, and the SNES version of SMT 1. And on the shelf of other JRPGs waiting to be played is still Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne, along with the two games of the Digital Devil Saga series.
Nikiea Posted January 12, 2013 Author Posted January 12, 2013 Ah yes, Earthbound, It deals with pretty intense stuff. The first RPG that made me sob like a baby xD. My favorite favorite from the series is Breath of Fire 3, I had so many fond memories of it, trying out different dragon combinations and using Kaiser for the first time, good times. Most of the one's I have are pretty obscure. Such as?
The DarkSlayer Posted January 12, 2013 Posted January 12, 2013 The Tales Series, ever heard of it? Ar Tonelico, Mana khemia, Legend of Mana, Rouge Galaxy, Atalier Meruru and Totori, Soul Nomad, Disgaea, just to name a few.
Kamen Rider Kuuga Posted January 12, 2013 Posted January 12, 2013 The Tales series is obscure? That's news to me. When I think obscure, what comes to mind is Summon Night, despite atleat three games being released in the US.
The DarkSlayer Posted January 12, 2013 Posted January 12, 2013 Apparently not, lol If only all of the series was translated *sigh*... Forgot to metion Robot Taisen, It's like the Dead or Alive of JRPGs Edit That's Sterk on your avatar, am I right Nikiea?
Kamen Rider Kuuga Posted January 12, 2013 Posted January 12, 2013 Before the PSP, I could have said Ys was one of the most obscure, outside of Japan, series ever, with one game translated on the Master System, one on the SNES, atleast one on the TurboGrafx (which in itself is kind of obscure) and one on the PS2. The PSP was a boom time for the series, since we got 1, 2, 3, 6 and 7. And just last year was another great boom, since we got Oath and Origins officially released on the PC on Steam.
Guest Lady Luck Posted January 13, 2013 Posted January 13, 2013 The Tales Series' date=' ever heard of it? Ar Tonelico, Mana khemia, Legend of Mana, Rouge Galaxy, Atalier Meruru and Totori, Soul Nomad, Disgaea, just to name a few. Apparently not, lol Tongue If only all of the series was translated *sigh*... Forgot to metion Robot Taisen, It's like the Dead or Alive of JRPGs Big Grin Edit That's Sterk on your avatar, am I right Nikiea? XD, my roomate recently bought tales of destiny and tales of the abyss he says its the best series they come up so far other then that some of them he says just bland and boring ..
Nikiea Posted January 13, 2013 Author Posted January 13, 2013 Edit That's Sterk on your avatar' date=' am I right Nikiea? [/quote'] Bingo! He's thee badass character evah! Can you think of anyone who can cut the Moon in half? No one I tell ya! xD As for me I would go for Tales of Graces, it's a shame some of the titles are Japan exclusives, the battle system is quite impressive.
Guest Lady Luck Posted January 13, 2013 Posted January 13, 2013 Yeah i'm a bit noob at tales series , but for me if you ask what my favorite persona game i go with persona 2 and 3 thats best series they came up so far other then that when i go other series it went from being good and just plain annoying! like seriously..
The DarkSlayer Posted January 13, 2013 Posted January 13, 2013 Edit That's Sterk on your avatar' date=' am I right Nikiea? [/quote'] Bingo! He's thee badass character evah! Can you think of anyone who can cut the Moon in half? No one I tell ya! xD LOL, He's Arte is so over the top, he should've been one of the Tales character . Edit Oh, If anyone is interested in trying a Tales fighting game, check this site out http://acs.e-whs.tk/game/

That's what makes him so Badass xD Love Ys games too. The ones I played are, Oath of Felghana and Origin. So is that similar to the PSP fighting game?
Captain Cobra Posted January 13, 2013 Posted January 13, 2013 The Disgaea games are the only JRPGs that I have. They get good use though.
Kamen Rider Kuuga Posted January 13, 2013 Posted January 13, 2013 I only have the PSP port of the first game. I can't seem to be bothered to play much beyond the first fight with Vyers, though. I don't even know why, either; I just lose interest. I have copies of Makai Kingdom, La Pucelle: Tactics and Phantom Brave, none of which I've actually played. But then, speaking of NIS, I also have copies of Atelier Iris 1 and 2 along with Dragoneer's Aria. I have AI1 pretty much done, as I only have to finish the last of the final dungeon and beat the last boss, and DA... I don't even remember. I haven't played that in... oh, three years...? And I can still remember my reaction to hearing Euphe for the first time and realizing that it was the same VA as Orihime from Bleach. Then I could make nothing but mental jokes. And speaking of games I need to get back to, there's Odin Sphere. I really liked that game, it's just that things got away from me and suddenly it's about a year since I last played the game. The same could be said for Dragon Quest 7 and 8.
The DarkSlayer Posted January 13, 2013 Posted January 13, 2013 How is Odin Sphere by the way? I have a copy but never got around playing it. I heard it's similar to Muramasa the Demonblade. So is that similar to the PSP fighting game? Well sort off. It's in 2d, it has more moves than the PSP one and the artes are duplicated really well.
