DeltaD36 Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 For lack of my own laziness and for the good of my temper and everyone elses; I'd like to ask for a already Glossed Skin for a custom race or races. First, I'd like to ask if anyone has a pre-Glossed skin for Moonshadow Elves that they would be willing to share with me. I need the Head and Body, though. I've been looking for this everywhere, and I've even tried NIFSkope and GlossMax. Eerytime I'd come across a tutorial, they where either badly written or just gibberish. <_> I also do not own Photoshop. I have GIMP but I only know how to Heal images. Second, I'm also looking for a glossed skin and head for the 'Synx' Custom Race. Here's a link to it in Oblivion Nexus. Beautiful Race. Synx Custom Race at Oblivion Nexus I know that my requests are selfish but to be honest, I trust the community of Lovers Lab much more than TESNexus. Thank you!
Guest ThatOne Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 Just open the nif in NifSkope and raise the gloss. Use glossmax if you'd like. Use "Everything" to make it faster if you have a whole bunch of nifs that you'd like to have gloss (clothes and armors for example). To raise the gloss in NifSkope: Open your nif, on the left side there'll be a list with hopefully just one entry (otherwise you've got a dirty nif). Click on the skin part of a mesh (if it's the base body then just click it). One of the entries should be selected. Expand it and you'll see a color palette icon. Click it. At the bottom should be "Alpha" and "Gloss". Make sure the alpha is 1 (far right) and change the gloss to suit your taste (max is 100). Basic (no gloss) is 10. I've never used GlossMax or Everything, so you'll have to figure those out on your own or ask someone else. As for changing the texture itself, if you've already done the above and are not satisfied with the results, get dds converter. Convert your race's normal map (the one that ends in _n) and increase the lighting\add more white\use whatever it is that the function is called that makes the image brighter. I'm not glossing textures for you because: Firstly, I don't know how much gloss you want. Secondly, I think you should try to gloss your nifs before you work with textures. That's my preference and not necessarily the best way to go about things.

Yes, I saved it after I changed it and made backups of the original. I'd try the .DDS converter thing, but I have no clue what files are what anymore. .NIF now have a diffrent tag correspondong with NIFSkope, and .dds files are now called .nif files and can't be opened in NIFSkope. x_x All very confusing. I'd like to have alll glossed models set to 100. But I still have no idea what I'm doing. I HAVE looked up tutorials on GlossMax, but as far as I know it only glosses FemaleFoot, FemaleHand, FemaleUpperbody, and FemaleLowerbody from Meshs/Characters/_male. I HAVE dragged the files to gloss max, and on occasion gotten "Succuss" or "Skip" by doing the same thing. And if it DOES say success, what do I do than? It's all very vauge.
Guest ThatOne Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 dds files are textures. They are images saved in a specific format (DX1) which Oblivion applies to the mesh (the .nif file). Get dds converter 2 or some similar program to convert these to a standard image format you can open with gimp. When you convert the normal map of your race's texture (look in the archive you downloaded to find where it is) all you have to do is add more light if adding gloss in NifSkope doesn't work. I'm no expert on the subject, so hopefully someone else can tell you why you aren't getting gloss from your nif settings.
Siouliusn Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 For full gloss you have to paint the *alpha* white, or as close as possible to white. (alpha white=100% shine; alpha black = 0%shine). That was the texture part, now you shine but want to gloss ? Edit the glossiness of the body mesh. CHeck ingame if while nude it work, if not compare the folder structure of the files you edited with the one from your custom race mod.

I got the body to work, and it's mostly heads that are unglossed. However I think I worked out how to gloss the head in NIFSkope. I tested this on the Chocolate Elf head and it worked fine. BUT, I have tried this on others and I don't think I noticed the change. The material for the Chocolate Elf head is called 'skin' while another race ie; Moonshadow Elves have theirs labeled 'Material' or something else. Could this change anything? The problem is motly armors not displaying glossed tones. I know that I must individually do Gloss each armor... Is ther a Program that can Gloss my Armors for me or will I have to do the task myself? If I must do it myself, would somebone be so kind as to tell me the files I must edit to gloss them? :/
Guest ThatOne Posted November 7, 2012 Posted November 7, 2012 Change the material to be Foot:Upperbody or Foot:Lowerbody or whatever. Oblivion associates the entire body with the foot textures, as you may have noticed by the texture path. "Everything" on the nexus can be used to quickly gloss all your armors. It should only gloss the skin according to the description.
DeltaD36 Posted November 8, 2012 Author Posted November 8, 2012 I will try out this program. thank you for your help.
