Depending on your mod list lootification can be a total pain to even get to run, though a very very tough block list can help out a lot, even then it may never run for you, I know it will not for me.

Lootification absolutely requres a Bashed or a Smashed patch to correctly run.  There's an article in the mod's articles tab that talks about how to use this with Lootification.

Although the article talks about a combined Bashed/xEdit Merged patch, I recommend using Mator Smash to make a Smashed patch instead, as it does all Wrye Bash and the xEdit Merged patch does and more.

Pretty much that, or learn how to make leveled lists yourself with the CK.  It's actually not that hard if you don't want to go through the hassle of making enchanted or tempered versions.

If the smash patcher runs at all, I have had plenty of times when I was using it where the damn thing just crapped out part of the way through, no error messages or anything it just froze and stopped doing anything, normally I ran it overnight to make sure there was nothing interfering with it, starting it just before going to bed, and checking how it did just after getting up, I would normally say 50/50 chance of it working or not.

But yes a bash and merged patch are required for lootification though to be honest I had more luck with using it with only a bashed patch and no merged patch, and making sure that the various weapons/armors have the correct material/location keywords on them, this tends to be the thing causing a lot of problems, where something is not correctly key worded.

Creating your own level lists is a bit tedious, and depending on how common you want stuff to be you can just add them to the vanilla level lists for the materials/type, however if there are dozens of the same type of items, say iron daggers from a mod, then it is better to create your own custom level lists set-up and use that as a template for each mod you are adding level lists entries to.

Though setting up the level list template can be seriously tedious to say the least.  It also depends on how many items the mod is adding, though it is a lot easier to use the ck for this than xedit.
