How many MIT compatible art assets do we have? / Plea for all modders

Hi,

I'm working on an open source sandbox for roleplaying games with which people can build their own games, including lewd ones. I began my project after dabbing my hands in modding Skyrim and I think I learned a lot about making games in the process.

Honestly speaking, I doubt it will finish anytime soon because I'm the only developer of the project and I'm doing it with quite an unusual approach. So far, I haven't had too much trouble with coding part, but I found that creating art assets to be such a time consuming process.

It reminded me of all those great assets from the community which I took for granted when I worked on my Skyrim mod, like body replacers, textures, furnitures, animations, and others. I checked their licenses to see if I can reuse some of them for my project, but unfortunately most of them seem to be provided without any clear license terms.

I'm pretty sure that I'm not the only indie game developer who's experiencing such a problem, and I suspect it could also be the reason why we don't have many - or rather, any - quality open source 3D games with lewd contents yet.

So, I'd like to ask if there are any art assets in this community which can be used in a MIT project, and more importantly, if there would be any mod owners who'd willing to make their work available to such open source attempts to create lewd content?

For my own project, I need such things like good genital meshes for both genders, clothes and armors, BDSM devices, and maybe animations if I figure out how to retarget them for my own model. But probably others who are working on a similar project could benefit from other types of assets too.

I know that we have so many great mod and design resources in this community which became available by much hard works and generous spirit of our contributors. I wish their usefulness wouldn't die with Skyrim, so they can also help other people who try to make an open source game that we can all benefit from our shared efforts.

Thanks!

I'm sure Paragon's assets where all released for free on the Unreal Engine, some nice art there.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure they can't be modified and distributed in their source form along with a non-Unreal, MIT licensed open source game project.

the licensed for Paragon's assets is you must use unreal for it.

and i don't think you can find any open source for it assets , atlast the good one.

as there is alot of thing to take note when you put in the game engine .

it will be alot more easy to find some one to help you for it.

Yeah, pretty much as I suspected. By the way, I'm not looking for free assets to save production cost of a proprietary game. Rather, I'm working on a MIT licensed open source project and want to see more of open source efforts to create lewd contents, so I can't simply hire someone to do art assets for me.

sorry didn't make it clear, i don't mean hire, i mean finding people who want to make this kind of thing and   join the project,

i think there is people who just want to do the art stuff, and don't want to do any coding.  so these kind of people is  the one that you want to work with, to make something which is open source .

and is hard to find assets that fit your need with out alot of work.

Now I see your points, thanks for the clarification :)

However, my motive for having written this post was mainly to encourage mod authors to release their existing assets under an open source license. I could have contacted individual authors who created contents that I'm personally interested in, but I thought it'd be better to open a thread about it because I'm sure there are other open source game developers with a similar problem with mine.

i think is hard to encourage mod authors to release their existing assets, not because they don't want let people use but more like they have to do more work. (and is boring to go back and redo any old model)

it will be hard to use any existing assets which got animation,   and it is the model that got animation assets that cost the most time.

any model that got no animation is easy to make, and should be able to find some open source online . ( not sure where as i don't find it, i make it my self)

Well, if you think simply declaring your existing model is now under an open source license (optionally, with uploading the source materials) to be something 'difficult' while those who might not be proficient at 3D modelling trying to create something like a realistic genital model to be something 'easy', I have to suspect if your definition of the terms might be skewed.

well,  to you making a genital model is hard, to artist like me is  easy.

to me, is very hard to go back and check which model i make and change it to open source .  (if you are a artist had make so many model that you can't remember , it is very hard, i will had just make new model for it)

so in short , you are asking a artist to go back  and check a very big list of model that he make and see  which model  to change it to open source,(if he can remember he make it) which he didn't want to at that time.   don't think  is a easy thing to do.

Good for you, if you are such a good artist that you never need any open source art assets. I have no doubt that you would also be such a great coder that you don't need any open source applications like Chrome, Android, Blender, and more as well. Who needs open source when you can do everything yourself?

Maybe I should just contact the individual authors of such mods like SoS or Clams of Skyrim for help, and I hope they may have a better memory than yours, so they may remember those little projects among some 50 million others they did in the past. ?

well, can tell you don't believe me that is hard to remember what you had make,  maybe you will when there is more then one person telling you the same thing.

I believe the artistic assets would be better off under a Creative Commons license.

BTW I’ve been thinking about this type of idea as well.  I’d be willing to contribute to authors to revisit their projects and release under an open license.

@mysticfall what engine are you using for your project?

Yes, I agree that CC-BY or CC0 would be great and I'm already using several art assets released under such a license.

As to my own project, it's based on Godot which is also an open source game engine. I expect it'll need at least a couple of years until it can become something useful, but the source code is already available on Github, and you can track down the progress on my Youtube channel, if you are interested:
